We probably got over the line in that WC because we replaced Yusuf Pathan with Raina half-way through. He played invaluable cameos against Australia and Pakistan.

Raina turned into a sloggy, legside hack but he was good in Asian conditions, terribad against any type of bounce.

I'm not entirely sure he's past it tbh. As daemon said, he was asked to do something he's not particularly good at.

Karthik is no spring chicken either, which was my point. At this point India can only stick with the better keeper and hope for the best.

The innings against Pakistan was crucial. It looked like India might get bowled out for 220-230 at one stage but managed to stitch together some nice partnerships with the tail.

That Sachin review, the Raina cameo, the terrible Misbah innings. That match gave me PTSD.

Tbf, with Pandya doing well I'm not sure how Raina actually fits into the team but I'd sure as hell have preferred him over Shankar., who atm isn't even being asked to bowl.

Yuvraj, Raina and Dhoni of old. We used to have such a gun lower order. May be we should have never dropped Yuvraj since champions trophy. He was desperate to play the world cup too. Would have been a better #4 than Shankar at least.

Raina actually did really well in the 2015 World Cup before he predictably got owned by a couple of short pitched deliveries from the first team we faced who could get it above waist height.

Anyway, he's way past his sell-by date and there's no point discussing his merits, he should never have been brought back or considered as an option. What we should have done is looked towards grooming a couple of young-ish, technically solid players for the middle order slots and given them a longer rope in the build up to the World Cup. We tried too much chopping and changing and no one really got much of a run.

No way, Yuvraj post cancer has been worse than Dhoni at his current worst.

Would have him over Shankar. But it doesn't matter.

Am actually a bit glad India have such a **** middle order. Would be unbeatable otherwise.

Averaged 42 striking at 98 in 2017, his final year in the international team. Surprised he wasn't picked for the WC based on that
Had a poor Champions Trophy and WI series after that. I don't like making the whole "if you take out his best innings his stats don't look so good" but it's important to know that besides the 150 he generally did **** all.

He just didn't look in any kind of nick at all.

Manish Pandey should have been at this WC, he was completely mishandled. Would have been a perfect fit for 4 and is a gun fielder to boot.

Also something is holding back Suryakumar Yadav and Sarfraz Khan and I'm not sure what.

Yeah I think this situation has mainly been created by ****ing around with the wrong players in the lead-up. So many opportunities were wasted on Rayudu because Kohli rated him and dat misleading average or something, and even though I like Shankar as a batting talent (I'm quite happy he's being recognised as such now instead of the pie-chucking allrounder he was selected as originally) he clearly should've been behind a couple of others as specialist batsmen and kind of just fell into the spot by being in the squad as the bits and pieces player he isn't. There were also recalls for Raina and Karthik in that period, and while I don't hate those so much in a general sense because they could've competed for lower middle spots if Jadhav didn't work out, they batted 3-4 in most of their games which was particularly stupid.

Using those games/places to give players like Gill, Shaw or a recall for the one player who might've actually made a fist of it in the spot they were looking for an answer (Pandey), could've made the situation much better once Dhawan got injured.
