best current spanner

That is a very good question.

Combination spanners are multi-purpose, but tend to come in sets, so when you get rid of one it always seems impossible to get rid of them all. Just when you think you've found the last of that set lying around, another one pops up and the whole process repeats for a while.

Then you have the shifting spanner, which is fantastic for most jobs but never really knows what it's doing - perhaps it tends to change too much from day to day?

There is the flogging spanner, but that's just unpleasant to be around.

The ratchet spanner is pretty good, but traditionalists may not like the new-fangled modern technology and want to revert to a standard spanner. They think that the original is still the best, and the correct measure of a man's spanner-using ability.

Multigrips can be used for a number of things, but never seem to let go of that one particular bolt.

Then there's the Allen key. They are incredibly simple and can only be used for a limited number of things, but they're cheap and easily replaced. Unfortunately you end up with stacks of them rolling around the bottom of your toolbox and can never find the one for the right situation, and they become more annoying that what they're worth.

They all have different purposes, but ultimately they are just tools.

Maybe just build a robot to do it all for you?
