Jayasuria is always spoken about on comentary as being this amazing one day batsman who's easily one of the best in the world.

Who do you think is/was the better ODI batsman?

Whats with this sudden Knight fascination, hell I am thinking of creating a thread where I will compare myself with Knight unfortunatley I wont be able to provide any link to my stats for the comparisons.

Sorry, but i think it raises an interesting point about how we rate players, I don't think the issue is more about how you rate one of the legends of the game with a player that wouldn't normaly be mentioned in the same breath as Knight.

Pratyush says (through me because he's a bit busy and can't post on forums at present):

Jayasuriya played mainly as a bowler coming low down in the first part of his career. Only after he was asked to open did he truly shine as a batsman. Thus his first 100 matches show an average of just 19.

Statistics opening the batting (which may be a better direct comparison to Knight)

Code:
  M I NO Runs Avg 100 50 0
337 337 15 11424 35.47 25 62 24

What's easily forgotten about Jayasuriya is that, for the first 5 years at least of his career, he wasn't really even a batsman, never mind an opening batsman. He was a left-arm spinner who could also bat in the lower-order.

From 1994 or so onwards, however, he became a high-class opening batsman (average of something like 36, SR 90 or something). I've always believed that Jayasuriya > Gilchrist as an opening batsman, though there's probably not really much in it, they have the same vulnerabilities and much the same strengths (if Gilchrist has 1 or 2 more strokes).

Knight, however, was IMO better than both.

EDIT: how on Earth did Hakon (avec Pratyush) post near enough exactly the same thing just seconds before?

I mentioned him, and your comment says a lot, I think, about how widely he's underrated by being unknown.

No-one, ever, would say "what's with this sudden Gilchrist\Jayasuriya fascination". And no, that doesn't say anything about their respective abilities, just the misnomers of some cricket fans.

When you post a poll, you have the option of making the answers public - ie, everyone can see who voted what.

And almost invariably, it's far better to do that.
