***Official*** New Zealand in Australia 2011

Only tuned in 30 minutes ago. Outstanding test cricket, gripping stuff.

    *Official* English Football Season 2011-12

Sorry, are you calling me an idiot?

    *Official* English Football Season 2011-12

Yes, that's my point. Although investment was very strong later in his reign as well (late nineties to early noughties. It's only dipped during the mid-nineties when the youth players broke through and in recent years when they have other considerations.

Not to me, it's a measure of the investment in the team relative to income generated.

    *Official* English Football Season 2011-12

United's average net transfer spend over the past seven years is about £8m per year. Any transfer dealings at United have to take into account the economic realities of the club.

Backup wicketkeeper- or one too many?

Can anyone find a list of the international games (of all types) that Dhoni has played by year since he became skipper?

And the Moral of the Story is ................?

Think Lewis himself said that because he looked lithe and effortless that people expected him to be better than he was. I tend to think his problem was one of mental fortitude but it's a good point about the coaching regime at the time (or lack of it). Wonder how Ramprakash, Hick and Lewis may...

New Wickets - Any advice welcome

Would the wicket be literally on the pitch rather than, say, between 2 pitches?

Backup wicketkeeper- or one too many?

Enough about Dhoni, I think we need to know more about the grooming of Brad Haddin

    Eye Specialists in cricket

Searching for eye exercises yields a lot more than anything specific about cricket or sports. It appears as if it has been subject to some fairly wild claims about helping to avoid the need for glasses/lenses. Intuitively, though, I feel they could have some benefit when it comes to ball...

    Ian Botham vs Kapil Dev

Interesting stats. If we take the classic definition of an all-rounder - one who could hold a place in the team on batting or bowling alone - then cricketing history shows this to be incredibly rare. It means by definition holding a simultaneous top six and top four batting and bowling...

    Socrates - RIP

Aye, theirs was a fragile talent and able to implode at a moments notice. Over-reliant on the midfield to make up for lack of firepower elsewhere too. But they were sublime to watch and consecutive world cup semis either side of being European Champions was not a bad return - and one that would...

    Socrates - RIP

France that year as well. The last great World Cup (although 86 was pretty good).

    Socrates - RIP

Just been reading about how Socrates used his position as a national hero to challenge the military junta ruling Brazil at the time. He persuaded team-mates to wear shirts printed with 'I want to vote for my President' in one game. He challenged them to arrest him in post-match interviews. As...

    Ian Botham vs Kapil Dev

Stick with us, we'll have you believing we were the team of the nineties by Christmas :dry:

    Ian Botham vs Kapil Dev

Thing I've never understood is how Botham has managed to look fitter in the SKY commentary box that he did in the last few years of his career. In comparing all-rounders I think the debate often under-estimates how often Botham batted in the top six. Miss both of them. Forget the stats and...

    Eye Specialists in cricket

This link, under the section Visual Skills, describes some of the things that might matter. They seem to make sense and suggest strong eyes is about a lot more than strength of vision. sportsvision No closer though to knowing what can be done about any of it - that's what I'd really like to...

Test cricket, white balls, and artificial lighting

Red ball only. Would be nice if Umpires followed the laws of the game which state (I believe) that potential physical harm and not the risk of getting out is the criteria for stopping play. After all, they don't go off when there's morning dew on the pitch. If there is risk of physical harm I...

    Eye Specialists in cricket

My reasoning is partly curiosity out of what happens at top-level cricket, but also personal as well. I wear contacts so have my actual eyesight checked fairly often. Suspect there is more to it than that and wonder if the eye can be trained or exercised to improve ball tracking, focusing etc?
