Battle of Cricketers - CW's Favorite Cricketer

So if Headley was the Black Bradman, in cool terms, who's the "White Gayle". My money is on this man:

Fast bowler survival round 1 - please vote

The hits just keep on coming - C is virtually impossible to sensibly split! Group C Davidson Botham Willis Steyn Pollock Miller but that could be completely different on a different day. Botham figures so highly because of how he was prior to breaking down with injury. Group D: Akram Garner...

Bad luck for Roberts to have been drawn in the group of death. Will hopefully get a wildcard.

    Different measurements of bowlers

Highlights what a freak Barnes was. You can talk about pitch conditions etc, when weighing up averages or even strike rates, but the fact is that in the history of test cricket there have been only seven bowlers who've averaged more than 5 wickets a match, only one bowler in living memory...

    Different measurements of bowlers

From a post made in the Lillee vs Garner thread, I was talking about how wickets per match (wpm) or strike rate can be a valuable alternative/addition to straight bowling average when seeking to quantify a bowler's quality and importance. Strike rate is easy enough to retrieve from Statsguru...

Which was the greatest bowling partnership of them all?

    O'Reilly-Grimmett - 169 wickets in 15 matches at 21.14 apiece. McDermott-Hughes - 241 wickets in 29 matches at 27.6 apiece.

Lol, Warne 2005 was embarrassingly bad wasn't he? 8-)

**Official** 'My Current World XI' Thread

Bump. For a hypothetical match tomorrow, on current form. Sehwag Watson Sangakkara Tendulkar Kallis Clarke Dhoni+* Swann Steyn Asif Bollinger if fit, replace Asif with Hilfenhaus.

First Name on a World XI team sheet

Tests - a bit tricky actually IMO. Probably Sehwag, ahead of Steyn and Watson. ODIs - Dhoni, ahead of Watson. T20s - have repeatedly demonstrated that I don't follow it enough to have an informed opinion.

Joel Garner vs. Dennis Lillee (Tests only)

As I said, often the different analysis will simply show that the commonly perceived better bowler is indeed the better bowler. Sometimes however it will give some context that a simple bowling average misses out. FWIW, I have Marshall a clear #1, Lillee at 2, then probably Ambrose, then it all...

Joel Garner vs. Dennis Lillee (Tests only)

The "they had to share their wickets" argument goes both ways however. Yes, Garner was unlikely to take a 10-fer because of the other three gun quicks he was bowling with. He was also unlikely to be asked to bowl to a set batsman who had his eye in and was treating the rest of the bowling...

Battle of Cricketers - CW's Favorite Cricketer

Greg Chappell will struggle because not many here saw him play, because too many saw him coach, and Kiwis remember some sort of supposed 'underarm' incident.

Joel Garner vs. Dennis Lillee (Tests only)

in more general terms, I tend to think we at times place too much emphasis on a two or three run difference in bowling averages. Once we've established players are within a ballpark (say 20-24, 22-27, or whatever) the bowling average becomes pretty meaningless. Strike rate and wickets per match...

Joel Garner vs. Dennis Lillee (Tests only)

Pretty much confined to people who didn't see him play tbh.

Lara easily. What's with the joke candidates?

Fast bowler survival - rank the best fast bowlers of all time

Botham should definitely make the starting list. Focusing on his career average alone is a daft way to rate him as a bowler, given his injury affected last third of his career. He was lethal for the bulk of his career. Deciding how much weight to give the different aspects should be done by the...

At peak the Ws. For overall and durability, McWarne.
