*Official* New Zealand Domestic Cricket Season 2012/2013

Wagner getting Stewart lbw first ball must have been a goodie.... video of it anyone? And Johnston is new to me - what does he bowl and is he any good?

A criminal lack of Kiwis in that team. Turner, Richardson, Chatfield, Larsen, Vettori (with the ball, he's quite enterprising with the bat...) are all strong contenders.

Thommo was better than the two Macs and you missed out Turner, Johnstone and Gregory.

Graeme Smith vs Kevin Pietersen - better test batsman?

    Told you it was interesting....:p

Graeme Smith vs Kevin Pietersen - better test batsman?

Comparing an opener to a middle-order player is tricky. I think a more interesting thread would be to compare Pietersen to Clarke....

Even this may not be quite the issue it's made out to be as other sides won't necessarily have better number 6 batsmen. The Windies will probably have Sobers at 6 who certainly is a better batsman, but other countries' xi's may probably include the likes of Botham, Faulkner, Mankad or Kapil...

Chappell G Ponting Miller I want to pick both Warne and O'Reilly which means I think Miller is needed in the top 6. As others have said, having Bradman and Gilchrist means the sacrifice of a dozen runs per innings (and arguably it wouldn't even be that, if this contest brings out the best in...

I'll weigh in on the Pakistan spinner debate... I've never quite understood the status Qadir has. Yes he was the first decent leggie in a while, and when he got his googly right it was a thing of beauty (still remember him bowling Jeff Crowe with one, Crowe probably still doesn't have a clue...

I always assumed Lindsay would be the keeper in a SA all-time side, but it seems most folk prefer Waite or Cameron? I like the above side, but I would take the extra bowler - Pollock at 10 seems a bit of a luxury. So Taylor out, the others up one place, and Tayfield at 10. Three top-class...

I tend to agree, but I think a great opener is more likely to be able to bat at 3 than a successful number 5. So I'm happy that Hutton was a great opener, and would have scored runs at 3. (Your last point is wrong. In his 7 innings for England where he didn't open, he averaged 57...)

Oh, and I see you picked Zaheer at number 3 for Pakistan. Average in that position 39. I think I'd trust Hutton at 3 for England over Zaheer at 3 for Pakistan....

Questions for KYear... So was it "intellectually dishonest" of the Australian selectors in the 90s to pick David Boon at 3? or the English selectors when they picked Vaughan or Butcher to play and not open.... (Given the bowling line-ups these alltime sides will be facing in the mythical...

Yet you didn't comment on Inzamam being picked at 3 for Pakistan? He played in that position 9 times and averaged just 24. I'm pretty sure Younis Khan is the best number 3 to play for Pakistan, as Javed and Zaheer also had poor records there. I personally think an opener can play at number...

I don't get what a fifth seam bowler adds to the side. If you're going to go without a spinner, I'd add one of Richardson, Jones or Fleming as a 6th batsman.

Whenever I think about an all-time Windies team I cheat twice (three times if playing Walcott as a keeper counts...) Pick a top-7 of Headley, Lara, Richards, Sobers, Walcott, Weekes, Worrell (in alpha order), then let them draw straws to see who opens...

    ***Official*** England in India

Sorry folks, I've been away from a computer for ten days or so. I've heard Pietersen is back in the England fold - does this mean he's going to India for the test series?

But Bill Bowes has an even better first class average and a test average of 22, and no-one picks him in their best all-time England sides.... Maurice Tate is another who averaged sub-20 in first class cricket but had (much) better test figures than Larwood.

Three points... - am I right in saying everyone is picking Warne, O'Reilly and Lillee in the AT Australian side? In which case I think one of Lindwall or Davidson to bat at 8 is a pretty reasonable call, much as I admire McGrath. - Barrington averaged 77 at number 3, and only 41 at number 5...
