    Shafted.............

If you're including Ilott, then Phil Newport is worth a mention. 800-odd first class wickets at 26, and he was a genuine number 8 in a period when England's tail was often pretty feeble. (Bicknell also became a very reliable late order batsman, as did Glen Chapple...)

    English batting post-Hutton, pre-Gower

I think the 74-75 series against Australia and the following couple of years series against Australia and the West Indies have tainted our perceptions of the side a bit. They were simply exceptional bowling attacks to be facing, and I don't think it's any disgrace to have lost to them. The...

Not been watching this but Jarvis's figures are a bit of a contrast to his first test effort - having an off day?

    Best Test batting line-ups

Turned out not to be test matches but the Rest of the World xi top and middle order - all of whom played all 5 matches - from 1970 wasn't too shabby... Richards B Barlow Kanhai Pollock Sobers Lloyd Procter + Mushtaq Mohammad played a couple of matches and presumably pushed Procter down to 8...

Sign me up. He's a Bangladeshi seam/quick bowler currently averaging under 40 - what's not to love?

    Best After The Don

Look at the tour schedule from the 1948 tour : Australia had 3 day matches starting on : April 28 May 1 May 5 May 8 May 12 May 15 May 19 May 22 May 26 May 29 June 2 June 5 before finally getting their first two-day rest period before the first test on the 10th June. Some of the three...

    Best After The Don

The stat merely reflects the fact that for much of his career the Windies were rubbish and so he very often got to bat twice. He played 1.77 innings per match. Viv played 1.5 innings per match, for instance. Not trying to say he wasn't brilliant or anything, he was.

Warne didn't do very well with a good aggressive spinner at the other end. He preferred to bowl with the likes of Tim May....

Sri Lanka ATG Team- Open Voting

From the list provided, Jayasuriya-Attapattu. But really Jayasuriya-Gurusinha.

Sri Lanka ATG Team- Open Voting

As ever, the nature of the rest of the side might be important. If the bowling attack will be two spinners and two seamers - I'd guess Vaas-Herath-Malinga-Murali is likely - then Gurusinhha would be a good pick. (Almost) as good a bat as Attapattu / Dilshan, and handy seam-up bowler. If folk...

    Best After The Don

I just don't get the "it must have been easier back then" arguments. In the entire 1920s and 1930s Australian teams averaged about 37 runs per wicket against all opposition, including Bradman's distorting effect. If you take him out of it the number falls to around 34. In the 1990s...

    Best After The Don

But kyear, if Bradman had it so easy, why do you have Hutton and Hobbs in your first xi, and Headley and Sutcliffe in your second xi? Surely if Bradman's average is inflated 30% by how easy it was to be a batsmen in that era, then the averages of Hobbs et al must be similarly discounted, which...

If Border never did anything other than play in this match, he'd be worth a mention in a list of all time top 15 batsmen.... 2nd Test: West Indies v Australia at Port of Spain, Mar 16-21, 1984 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

All Right Kiwis, Hand On Heart: Fulton/Rutherford - Do You Believe?

They did get to bat on some fairly friendly wickets against an attack that didn't really fire. I suspect even Guptill would have managed one big innings in the series somewhere, so I'm trying to keep my expectations to reasonable levels. If it's bowler-friendly in England for the return series...

***Official*** England in New Zealand series 2013

Has a pretty good record against tail-enders and Bangladeshis doesn't he? That's the point I was trying to make, that bowling to players of the standard of Broad, Anderson and Panesar, he might have been useful. Obviously some here don't agree.:(
