4th Test at Old Trafford, Manchester

I assume the thinking is that Marsh can do what Watson did in the past to allow Johnson to bowl really fast for 4-5 over spells, with Starc in the Johnson role now. But Marsh is nowhere near as good as Watson at either discipline, and I don't know that Starc is at his best when striving for...

    3rd Test at Headingley, Leeds

So I only just caught some highlights of this having read a lot here and on the Guardian. My thoughts : - when a batsman goes full T20 mode, you really notice how far in they pull the boundaries. Some folk compared Stokes to Botham in '81 and commented that Botham had a lot of top edges...

*Official* India in West Indies 2019

Yep. I doubt it applies to anyone in this thread, but if you haven't seen the spell, go to YouTube and watch it. I was just following the scorecard as it was happening thinking "oh you useless bleeps" as the Windies crumbled, but then I watched the highlights later and was very glad I did. It...

*Official* New Zealand tour of Sri Lanka 2019

Sri Lanka are a weirdly unpredictable team these days. They get these great wins and you think "oh, they're going to survive the loss of Murali, Sanga, Herath etc"... and then you see Thirimanne is in the side for the next series. .

Worst Test Cricketers of All Time

Was Marc71178 really allowed to get away with picking George Lohmann? Yes his batting average of 8.87 was nothing to write home about, but I'd have thought 112 wickets at 10 point something would take you out of contention for worst player ever...

If you want build India's all time greatest test team, what players will you choose?

Assuming they're playing at home... (if they're touring SA, Aus or WI of old, I can understand you picking Amarnath...) Gavaskar Merchant Dravid Tendulkar Kohli Kapil Dev Mankad Ashwin Kirmani * Kumble Srinath Alternatives are : Sehwag opening, Hazare in at 6 with just 4x bowlers, Engineer...

Cribbage's Standardised Test Averages (UPDATED November 2018 - posts 753-755)

McGrath has always been a funny one for me - the only time I ever saw him bowl a lot was the 2001 series vs NZ, when the NZ batsman completely neutralised him by refusing to play anything outside off. I checked cricinfo and his series figures were 5-327. I watched pretty much every ball of...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

If it was 1974, then interesting you went with Boycott and Snow, who were pretty much in exile then weren't they? Amiss was probably the better opener at that particular point in time. Other than quibbling with the balance of the side, so maybe putting Boyce in ahead of one of the l-arm...

*Official* Bangladesh Tour of New Zealand 2019

I wasn't saying they were a target. But when 49 people are killed because of who they are and where they pray, it isn't just "one incident". This isn't like random bombings by the IRA or terror attacks by the jihadis on civilians in London. There are bound to be similarly sick ****wits in...

*Official* Bangladesh Tour of New Zealand 2019

New Zealand have been very wary about travelling to supposedly risky places in the past (Kenya in particular springs to mind). So they could hardly complain if in particular Pakistan and Bangladesh refused to come here - if there are any other psychopaths like this one out there, a touring...

*Official* Bangladesh Tour of New Zealand 2019

It's like people have never seen NZ, in particular Wagner, bowl before.

*Official* Bangladesh Tour of New Zealand 2019

The NZ economy rates are weird - Wagner at about 2.5, the rest at 4 and above. Not what I'd expect....

Yes, when do we start talking about Bannerman? Maybe if a couple more wickets fall?

*Official* Afghanistan vs Ireland at Dehradun

I'm sure Dehradun is a lovely place but being there for a month is a bit extreme. (I should probably check the squads to see how many players play all three formats...)

    Your Current Turd XI

Depends a bit on what you mean by current. All of these played in 2018 at least, haven't checked if it was within the last 12 months I admit : Jennings (Chari may be a better pick but let's exclude Zimbabweans to keep it interesting) Gunathillake, Thirimanne, de Bruyn, Ambris, Marsh M...

    England v Australia 1985

Were England mucking around with the seams on the balls used about this time? Seem to recall they tried to stop trundlers getting their 80 wicket seasons by making the seam much less prominent at some time.

What Qualifies as a Test Allrounder?

Ben Stokes batting and bowling rates are virtually identical. He's the perfect allrounder!

What Qualifies as a Test Allrounder?

I'm happy with the revised list; it includes allrounders who were clearly selected as allrounders and were relatively successful, but only played 20 or so tests so wouldn't reach the previous limits. I agree that the ratings should favour people who are good at both disciplines fairly equally...
