    Vernon Philander retires

I'm on cricbuzz currently and I can't see any news of Philander retiring. Is this official ?

DoG's Top 100 Test Batsmen Countdown Thread

South Africa played only Australia, England and NZ in that period, and not very often against NZ, so I'd expect a big majority of Nourse's tests to be against quality opposition.

    The most nondescript cricketers

Of the original four listed, Ross Edwards was a brilliant cover fielder and averaged 40 in an era when it wasn't that common. He might not have stood out next to Chappell x2 and Walters however. And Kim Barnett was anything but unremarkable. Go find video of him batting if you've never seen him.

Something tells me Raval will not be a success against Starc and Hazlewood (I would say Cummins as well, but I don't think he'll last till Cummins gets a bowl). Next cab off the rank is?

And Bilal Asif, who wasn't much of a batsman but at least was a decent bowler?

Agree with both your points. Bowler has to have something behind the line and there's no way that was the case there. And yeah, look forward to seeing bowlers in shoes with a trailing foot long piece of plastic behind their shoes if it's decided that the bulge on his heel counts....

What's the rule on impact anyway? What does "in line with" mean.... Anything in line, all in line, >50% in line? I'm going to guess whoever first drafted the law didn't give it much thought...

*Official* England in New Zealand 2019

Anyone old enough to remember Lance Cairns being no-balled for bowling one bouncer to Jim Higgs (who tbf was a number 12 rather than a number 11 with the bat) when he gloved one to the keeper? That umpire would wonder what's going on these days...

Waqar never seems to get a mention in these chats, but didn't he have the best strike rate of all?

And he retired in 1976 I think so his 50 innings peak won't have been 1976-1979...

    Wastemen etc

Unless it's on a spinner's paradise this isn't even close. Stewart the better keeper, miles better opener, and I'd take him in the middle order. Even then, Stewart's problems vs spin were generally overstated (most people had problems with Warne).

Why aren't there more spinner all rounders?

Hooper started off bowling medium pace swing I think. As for the original premise, when I was growing up, every provincial team in NZ had a spinning all rounder at 6 or 7... or two. Chris Kuggeleijn, Evan Gray, Stu Duff, Mark Priest, Vaughan Brown, John Bracewell, Dipak Patel etc. Given NZ...

*Official* South Africa in India, Sep/Oct 2019

Folk have forgotten about Kumar as well - will he ever be back in contention?. Arguably on away tracks India's best seam line-up is Kumar, Ishant and Bumrah, so this is kind of their second string doing the damage here.

But based on what Abbott did... having him and Olivier available could only help South Africa's prospects though at the moment it's the batting that seems more concerning.

I'm fairly sure the Flower brothers' father forced them to bat the "wrong" way, with the dominant hand on top. Certainly worked for Andy. Recently the entire English bowling attack all bowled right and batted left - Broad, Anderson, Stokes, Moeen, and Finn I think was the 5th.

I take it this isn't live on youtube like previous Bangladesh tests?

It's a funny one. It's not unheard of for whole tests to go by and not single over of spin happens. And it's certainly not uncommon for sides to pick no specialist spinner. And no-one screams about that. But even trying to be even-handed and all, this just looks... wrong somehow.
