    South Africa team selection

Almost certain Bavuma won't bat at 6. He should, but he won't. Realistically it should be 3. Hamza 4. Du Plessis/de Bruyn 5. Du Plessis/ de Bruyn 6. Bavuma. de Bruyn should definitely be looking at 4 long-term but for now they may look to put Du Plessis at four just because he's experienced...

*Official* South Africa in India, Sep/Oct 2019

To be fair, Markram has all but stamped his mark on the Test side already. Admittedly his potential is far higher than his current average but 44-odd is hardly a poor average. The recent SA A tour of India would surely have put any doubt to rest - the pitches have to be turners if you're...

*Official* South Africa in India, Sep/Oct 2019

The team is actually pretty decent on paper if Hamza and/or de Bruyn step up. Certain some fragility in that middle-order but the bowling is quality. Maharaj is one of the most underrated spinners around and has a massive opportunity to prove it in India.

Do you need to be tactically astute as a captain?

You're not wrong. They're all important, but in the real world it's incredibly tough to find a captain who ticks every box - and I'd rather have performance on the field than performance off it if I have to prioritise.

    South Africa team selection

Definitely Muthusamy. For reasons discussed yesterday/

Do you need to be tactically astute as a captain?

Yeah you need both. That said I'd prioritise tactics over player management, as the latter can still be done by senior players and doesn't need to be quite as hands-on a role as tactics. The captain is an official role that should be the overarching lead on decision-making on the field, so...

    South Africa team selection

I'd also love to have 12 players in our line-up  Seriously though, I'd add Verreyne and Janneman Malan to those batsmen and I think somewhere among those names we have our future top 7.

    Best(current) commentators

I really like Pommy Mbangwa, although I know lots don't. I think he's fantastic to have alongside a more excitable commentator.

    South Africa team selection

I don't even think it would push Mulder down. I'd be surprised if Mulder didn't bat above Muthusamy. It would just result in something weird like 5. QDK 6. Mulder 7. Muthusamy Which is completely unnecessary. Realistically I think they see him as an alternative for Mulder at 7 in spinning...

    South Africa team selection

I don't see any reason for him in Tests. In ODIs he's essentially a guy who can bat 7/ bowl 5 and give us a bit more batting depth (as Lucky can bat 8 then I guess?). Neither of his primary skills are Test-worthy - his bowling is clearly behind Maharaj and Piedt, and I'd rather have...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

This is the perennial problem with ATG teams - who are they playing against? Against a hypothetical equal team, you'd almost have to pick Hadlee at 8 because you're likely to need your 8 to bat a lot of the time - in which case the benefit Hadlee would provide is inarguable, for a minimal...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

It would be a very interesting exercise to find a way to representing batting and bowling in a single rating system that justifies value to team. For example, a 10% difference in batting average is probably less important than a 10% difference in bowling average to a team - for starters because...

S Africa calls for its players to stay

South Africans are emigrating to NZ/Eng/Aus at a rapid pace - not just cricketers. As a pro cricketer it makes sense to snap up a Kolpak deal as your ticket out if that's what you want.

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

30% of what? 5% of what? Chris Martin vs a bowler who is a 5% worse at bowling, and 30% better as a batsman? Chris Martin, easily. Imran Khan vs the same thing? Imran loses out comfortably. Generally, for a specialist bowler, ie averaging around 10-15, an extra 3-5 or so runs to the batting...
