    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Nah dude. Steyn in Australia is near ATG given you contextualise the era. 2008 he was the standout performer, and 2012 he had a great performance too. I’m not including his last match since he barely played in that one. WPM of 5+, a fantastic SR and great average for the era

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Agree to disagree there, as I view some other upsides to Steyn’s record as well.

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Fun fact: Steyn has more fifers in victories than any bowler, and has great records against the top order as well as the tail

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Agreed, but I’m looking at the overall picture. And that is a caveat in his record. But Hadlee and Mcgrath have equal caveats too

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Mcgrath more consistent, but then it was possible to blunt him somewhat in the SC and his record against the best opposition of his era is somewhat unimpressive. Everyone has small caveats in their record

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

For example the Aus teams and Ind teams NZ won against were far from their peak. Great achievement sure but, still I rate Steyn’s contributions as a match winner better.

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Steyn was the main differentiating across a range of series. Less consistent yes, but the range of conditions(which even you acknowledged). Mcgrath played in an ATG team. Plus by destructive I meant the SR and WPM at peak. For a majority of his career, 82 of 93 matches, Steyn took 409 wickets...

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

I think Steyn’s a greater match winner, as his performances were more impressive than those of Mcgrath and Hadlee overall. Steyn was brilliant in series wins/ties against best sides of his era: Ind, Aus and Eng(2012 series). Plus even though the others are more consistent, Steyn compensates that...

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Actually Steyn, Mcgrath and Hadlee are very very close. Could go with anyone of these (maybe I’ll go with the first, given I prioritise the prior’s match-winning capabilities, given he was the major performer for SA in a series win in Australia(there most one ever), two tied series in India, a...

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Hadlee was a lone warrior, whereas Mcgrath bowled in a stronger attack. That also needs to be considered. Whatever chances outside the three countries you mentioned, Hadlee capitalised on well: brilliant in India(equal to Mcgrath), Pak(early in his career, not a big problem) and a decent series...

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

The more and more time goes, I feel Murali is clearly better than Warne. Even in their India records, Murali was clearly better as he only played India once in his peak and had a good series(16 wickets in 3 matches) and dominated them at home. Also dominated ATG Australia at home. If he had one...

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

I now think Hadlee is slightly better than Mcgrath, given Hadlee’s performances in the only country he was bad in(Pak) can be justified through context, and he was not bad by any means in WI. Mcgrath was blunted somewhat in Pak and SL, and his record in India though great is a bit overrated...

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

But his volume of wickets at peak is something the other three aren’t close to. Plus he had a decent series in India in between and did well vs them at home.

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Even Hadlee and Mcgrath have weak spots in their record. I was never satisfied by the latter in the SC. Has a great record in India only there, but even there not even one fifer. Steyn ran through even better India lineups. Steyn mostly only in England and SL, but even in those countries, he had...

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

He’s in that group, but slightly ahead of them
  16. H

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Actually between Steyn, Hadlee, Mcgrath and Murali, it is deadly close
  17. H

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

I value a balanced record more. But it is very close and I very very marginally go for Steyn.

    Jacques Kallis vs Dale Steyn

Steyn is a top 4 bowler of all time. Kallis ain’t beating that
  19. H

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

A pretty tight comparison tho, just about go Steyn, both are top 5 bowlers

    Dale Steyn vs Muralitharan

Another important factor about Steyn is even in places like England and SL, where his record is not great, he managed to have a proper standout series like England 2012 and SL 2014, and moreover these were away series wins for. And these are in addition to Steyn’s genius in the away series wins...
