Mohammed Amir cleared to return with immediate effect

His talent is irrelevant to the argument. His age might provide some mitigation. The 'corrupt culture' in regards to this situation is a myth if (and I'm happy to accept it) what the person I spoke to said is true, he was instructed what to do if approached in such a way. I have been told by...

Mohammed Amir cleared to return with immediate effect

Spot fixing undermines the integrity of the game in a more subtle way than throwing the whole game (which is very hard to do) and thus is equally abhorrent. This appears to be the case, My view on Amir changed a few weeks ago. Had I posted on this before mid August I would have said he'd...

    Pink ball cricket - thoughts

Actually in Jardine and Larwood's day pink was not seen as a 'girly' colour. In the early part of the last century pink was the colour for boys. Not that such a thing has any relevance in 2015.

Moments(whether a ball, over or innings) in cricket nobody talks about that you love

Headingley 1977: David Hookes pushes the ball into the covers. There is a sniff of a quick single and Rick McCosker comes 3 steps down the pitch before aborting. He fails to make it back. Derek Randall is in quick as a flash and an underarm throw does the business. Randall's momentum sees him...

    Pink ball cricket - thoughts

The ones I normally come across seem to swing for a few overs. But that can be said about many of the red balls. I agree, they'll come into OD cricket first. We can look forward to the angry traditionalists moaning when it comes into Test cricket.

    Pink ball cricket - thoughts

I have quite a lot of experience umpiring games with them, top Club and good schools twenty/20 stuff. Four years ago they were poor. They were either too hard or fell apart pretty quickly. Discolouration was also often an issue. They have improved a lot. I have seen very few problems with...

    R.I.P. Lindsay Kline

I was only thinking the other day that there had never been a great 'chinamen' bowler in history. Lindsay Kline might well be considered the best one.

    RIP Frank Tyson

I remember an interview with Richie Benaud - never one of the ;in my day' group in which he said Tyson was the fastest bowler he ever seen. Good enough for me.

    ***Official*** English Domestic Season 2015

Mid 70s probably a shade late for Dye and Graham. The likes of Charles Rowe and Richard "The Vicar" Hills would have in the mix. Forget about Graham Johnson as well, who used to open the batting (Luckhurst had gone by the mid 70s) and bowl some very ordinary offies. And K.B.S.Jarvis is...

Least talented guys to have played international cricket?

Amongst English players from the mid 70s a few who come to mind who were clearly not of Test quality - and should never have been near the team would be: Tim Curtis Phil Newport Min Patel Ian Greig Chris Cowdrey Tim Munton Mike Watkinson Richard Blakey Mark Ilott Joey Benjamin I've left out...

    Brian Close dies

It's the one that gets him in the ribs that causes him to stagger that always gets me. We knew how tough he was and that must have hurt a lot.

***Official*** Australia in Ireland and England 2015 (limited overs)

Back in April all I was hearing from English fans and some rather ****y Aussies was that England would be lucky to win one Test in the Ashes and had absolutely no chance of winning the series - and would almost certainly lose the Test series to NZ as well. I told a few that I thought they were...

    Brian Close dies

As Eric Morecambe once observed: "Summer will soon be here and we can thrill to the sound of leather hitting Brian Close." Brian Close and John Edrich, Saturday evening, Old Trafford Test v the West Indies 1976 with the protective equipment of the day. As brave as anything you'll see in sport.

    Was Stokes Out?

I've not read through the whole thread but the above is a wrong view. The key word in the laws (not rules people) is 'wilful'. I've only briefly seen the incident but that would be the question I would ask myself, and my colleague.

    ***Official*** English Domestic Season 2015

Umpired him in a schools game early this summer. Only realised this the other day when someone I know from the opposing school pointed this out. Still struggling to recall him as he didn't stand out with bat or ball that day (keeping his powder dry probably) and there was nobody from that...
