Dunno if I'm prepared to give Watto that much credit ;) Indeed, Hughes might be worth a crack at 4.

Except he only played 3 FC games last season due to injury - and then got injured again.

I like your thinking re the recent opening pairings. Someone has to convert 50s in tons when opening. I dunno if it's Hughes though. I think he's highly susceptible to the swinging ball. The problem with him batting at 5 or 6 is he struggles against quality spin. It's a conundrum! First hour...

thankfully he hasn't been around the cricket threads on WP much. He's too busy in the AFL one.

Stoopid media driven controversies aside, I hope this Test has set the tone for the series. I think a lot of people in Pomgolia (and Oz!) underestimated us and while I expect we will lose the series, I expect us to make every match a bloody tough contest.

Funny old series that one. I felt a bit sorry for Bucknor. He carried the can for that debacle but Benson made more howlers in the Sydney match than Bucknor. Having said that, Bucky's time was definitely up. I reckon his eyesight AND his hearing had just about gone.

I'm still out on this one. Agar doesn't seem to get a lot of sidewise turn but his flight, drift and dip are far superior to Lyon. I thought this was pretty telling article: Ashton Agar a natural predator in Ashes series Australia v England Ashley Mallett says Agar is the best selection since...

Gilly broke the mould for wicketkeepers in that respect.

But isn't it just great theatre? That's what I love about Test cricket. In regards to Agar, no real surprise (apart from the fact that he batted so low) that he can bat. He's been discussed aplenty in "the other place" over the summer.

I agree. I wasn't having a crack at him. I'm a Siddle fan. He's just the sort of bowler who needs a lot of overs under his belt. Especially considering he doesn't play any short form cricket.
