The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Tayfield was definitely a class spinner by any standard.

    The great 1980s all rounders

Those who saw Walcott rated him quite highly as a keeper. However, as kyear2 pointed out, he never had to deal with high quality fast bowling. In any event, Walcott was forced to give up keeping fairly early in his career after sustaining a back injury. I would go with Jeff Dujon as the...

    The great 1980s all rounders

I don't think that this anecdote supports your case. Walcott's uncle gave him out LBW for 98 in a 1953 Test against India. :)

Your Country's XI who died during your lifetime

Conrad Hunte Roy Fredericks George Headley Frank Worrell* Clyde Walcott Collie Smith Learie Constantine Gerry Alexander Malcolm Marshall Manny Martindale Alf Valentine No great West Indian cricketer died BEFORE I was born. They are all still alive or in this team.

DoG's Test Innings and Bowling Performances. Updates thread.

I'm a bit surprised that Stan McCabe's 232 at Trent Bridge in 1938 does not make this list. Many who saw that innings - including Bradman and Compton - rate it as the best they ever witnessed.

Top Five Cricketers from each country

I agree that it makes sense to include Rest of the World matches and Packer Supertests when evaluating players. The standard of play in these games was higher than that in most Test matches played at the time.

CricketWeb decides the Greatest Players Post World War I

Andy Roberts should be included in this list.

Jack Hobbs vs Len Hutton vs Herbert Sutcliffe vs Sunil Gavaskar

As a matter of interest, when was Gavaskar considered "indisputably the best batsman in the world"?

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Les Ames. As a batsman he was Gilchrist Sr., scoring over 100 centuries in first class cricket and averaging 40 in Tests. He was also a great wicketkeeper - not quite the equal of his Kent successors Evans and Knott, but outstanding by any other standard.

CW chooses the best test spinner ever (50 names, but you only submit a list of 20)

Warne Murali O'Reilly Grimmett Verity Laker Rhodes Benaud Kumble Gibbs Tayfield Trumble Bedi Underwood Gupte Blythe Chandrasekhar Ramadhin Ashwin Saqlain This is much harder than compiling a list of greatest ever fast bowlers.

This all time Barbados team would give them a run for their money: Hunte Greenidge Worrell* Weekes Walcott Sobers Murray (David) Marshall Hall Garner Martindale

Ranking the candidates for best fast bowler ever - ~20 contenders

Marshall Lillee McGrath Barnes Wasim Ambrose Hadlee Lindwall Steyn Trueman Imran Holding Donald Davidson Garner Waqar Pollock Roberts Walsh Tyson Anderson Philander Bedser Adcock Larwood I would have been inclined to omit Barnes and Bedser from this exercise. They should ideally be considered...

Cricketers of limited talent who had International Success beyond their abilities

[/B] No. I saw Lloyd play just as he was about to enter first class cricket, and it was obvious even then that he was an extremely talented cricketer.

    Pre-1970 vs post-1970 World XI??

I would definitely include Headley and Barnes in a pre-1970 team, probably in place of Miller and Larwood. And if Imran is the all-rounder for the post 70 squad, I would probably go for Murali in place of Steyn. Still, even as selected both teams are exceptionally strong. Starfighter: What...
