    All-Time World XIs: Discussion Thread

I don't really have an opinion about Kallis vs Miller in this team. I'm just commenting on the batting order.

    All-Time World XIs: Discussion Thread

Sobers is just an oddity as his bowling pushed him into batting positions lower than he should have been in. Moving people a spot or 2 down the order isn't an issue. In this team, batting 5 would be easier than anywhere above it. Batting 6 would likely be easier than 3/4, except maybe for...

Kallid has 9000 runs @62 batting 4. Lara has 7500 runs@51. The best bats are all 3s/4s. You have to shuffle some of them. This is hardly batting players in odd spots in that context. It's backed by real world batting numbers and, more importantly, batting style. You know what takes a game away...

    All-Time World XIs: Discussion Thread

Not in this case. This team has great balance with either Kallis or Miller. Fair, but worth it. With the quality of this lineup, you are very seldom going to need huge scores. Rather have him shepherding the tail and making sure of very few lowish scores than getting the occasional huge score...

We aren't picking an entire order to allow flexibility in selections. That's how you get unbalanced teams.

In this team, you would just bat Kallis @4, where he was amazing, and Lara @6, where he would be amazing.

IIRC, someone tried it that way once and the results were horrible.

Yes, we know teams can be strong without ARs. We also know that when a team has quality ARs, they get better. I'm not saying this team is weak without Imran. I'm saying it's better with him. What do you mean by diminishing returns in this context? Runs are runs. Unless you mean something like...

    All-Time World XIs: Discussion Thread

Ya, it works for Akram too. I don't really rate him though. Not that I expect many people to agree with me, but as a bowler, I think he is further from Imran than Imran is from McGrath. And there's a pretty big batting difference. Still might be my second pick after Imran as the 3rd quick in...

I like the tiebreaker. It's funny having people get even more invested into their dude. Bolded makes sense to me though to speed things up.

    All-Time World XIs: Discussion Thread

I think I would pick Imran on bowling alone. McGrath is a better bowler, but variety is so important. This team already has 2 of the 3 best opening bowlers ever. How much difference is adding another one going to make in relation to boosting old ball bowling? And do we really want to be playing...

Viv. I don't like rating players until their careers are done. Smith is probably better though.

Meh this team already has 3 Aussies from the same era. That would be a worse problem than 3 players from different teams if era was an issue. With 3 players from the same era, you are basically just taking out an insurance policy against the era being soft. And it's a very expensive insurance...

    All-Time World XIs: Discussion Thread

Pairs of bowlers of such comparable quality is always going to give you a bit of a coin flip on which set performs better in any given match. You'll do a bit better than 50%, but not by much. Imran and Hadlee's batting is coming out ahead almost every match. And in games where you bat 2...

    All-Time World XIs: Discussion Thread

Yip. Hadlee is the top bowler, but there is so little between the top few that I'd leave him out to maximise variety. Way weaker team than Imran Hadlee Marshall though.

    Matthew Hayden vs Everton Weekes

And in one sense an ATB is just a quality player who picked the wrong country to stink it up in. It's obviously a more complicated than that, but it's not a position without merit.

    Matthew Hayden vs Everton Weekes

Seeing as there are close to zero players who have succeeded everywhere with anywhere near the number of teams going around now, you would expect not. A good bat doesn't need to succeed everywhere to be called good.
