On this pitch 5 batmen is overkill!!

Maybe using Daniel Vettori as a coach isn't such a bad idea, I don't think he was a natural test spinner, but knew the game and knew his own game and became a high quality spinner. We need someone who can get the best out of what is pretty limited natural talent. Both Rashid and Ali...

I think what was relevant was he did look completely shot by his third innings against what was a top quality South Africa bowling attack. There wasn't any real criticism of the selectors when he got dropped. He would be in my team, but he has a lot to do to prove he can move to the next...

On the batting side Stokes has a significantly higher batting average than Bairstow (in roughly the same number of matches) and Taylor. Taylor looks like a shoe in as he does look like he has more than half an idea against spin. I can't see Hales, Bairstow or Stokes doing much on a spinning...

Maybe reading too much in to this team but with only 2 warm-up games to play it looks like Ali to open. Looking at the bowling figure it also looks like he is likely to be our main spin bowler and therefore also our biggest sort of wicket taking threat on UAe wickets ... is that too much...

Can't agree with that move, Root scores consistently where he is and no other batsman can be relied on to do that. Any opener can get a good one in the first 10 overs, we could easily end up 20 - 6 if Root and Cook get out early.

Sadly I think that's the long and short of it. Ansari suddenly looks a great player when you look at the option!

I'd agree with the bit about the batsmen, but I'd also say at the moment moment Finn and woods haven't shown enough to say they are consistently better bowlers. We are very reliant on 2 bowlers and 2 batsmen and badly need other players to start stepping up.

I think that would be the probable team in the selectors mind ... with question marks over Buttler, Hales, Taylor, Bairstow. Need 2 spinners as there won't be any seam friendly pitches and I can't imagine a third seamer getting through a lot of work, unless it reverse swings for a dozen overs...

6 quicks on for the UAe on wickets where you really need 2 or 3 spinners seems like overkill. Can't imagine us having more than 3 seamers in the team for any of the tests. I think in part it reflects that neither Finn or Wood was 100% convincing as the 3rd seamer over the summer. Of the 6...

I guess that's the point of the selection - nobody has done any better. Hope he does well .... fear we'll have another opener at some point in the South Africa series.

I think the fact that Ansari is being mentioned as a possible opener tells the true story of our problems at the top of the order. I suppose the logic would be it would also give us 3 spinners and allow us to bat down to number 9 if you count Rashid as a good enough bat to be considered an...

Anyway I don't think Taylor as opener is a good option. He isn't a long term bet as he's too much of a lbw and knick off candidate against the new ball and has very rarely batted above 4 in the order in first class cricket - and as one of the better players of spin he's better off in the middle...

**Official** Pakistan and England in the UAE 2015/16

I think that's what I'd do, the bottom line is there isn't a specialist opener really pushing in county cricket to be given a shot. In fact there doesn't seem to be much pushing in any direction from county cricket at the moment in any department. Traditionally the UAe is a grave yard for...

***Official*** Australia in Ireland and England 2015 (limited overs)

Has Taylor done enough to get in to the test team? Think he has more potential to open than Moeen Ali who bats more like a number 5.

And Batty ended up doing even better with the ball. Ansari does seem a genuine all rounder, if in the Chris Tavare mould of batsmen. Biggest plus is he's a left armer, which would balance a leg spinner and two part time off spinners in Ali and Root. Based on the past history of wickets in...

*Official* New Zealand in England 2015

Great test and great day for England. If it wasn't for the dropped catches it would have been a great all round match for Stokes. Is there a case for throwing him the new ball while his confidence is on a high and see if he keeps the roll going?

Assuming Broad and Anderson play England need to then look at how they balance their attack. Given Anderson's age and Broad's fitness I think England need five bowlers. Ali probably plays by default as no specialist spinner seems any better and Stokes has done enough in the short-term to be...
