Ranking the Auxiliary skills in test cricket

Not sure the Thakur selection was a bad one on paper. His style of bowling should be suited to English conditions, and he should be a capable bat. He just failed to do either as well as he should have done in this Test.

    2nd Test (Edgbaston) - July 2nd

Didn't Kuldeep play a series in England way back? If I remember right he caused all sorts of problems for one or two games and then England figured out how to play him and he was largely innocuous after that.

I still don't really understand why the ECB managed Anderson out of international cricket in order to pick another ageing trundler in his place. Surely it's not just because Woakes can hold a bat?

What have we learned from the 1st test?

I fully expected the Indian batters to cart Bashir to all parts of the ground so as to force England to over bowl their seamers. They weren't able to do that, and he picked up a couple of important wickets, so I think he did his job. I don't think I'd be rushing to change the England team for...

    English Domestic Season 2025

Was the bowling actually worse than in most county games, or just exposed by the Kookaburra ball and short boundaries? That Lancs team does look pretty poor bar Anderson, Jennings, Bohannon and Harris.

Good finishes at Northampton, Bristol and Blackpool as it turns out.

Me too. Also thought Bashir had a surprisingly good game, he didn't get many wickets but offered some control. I still think it's a puzzling selection especially since he offers nothing with the bat but I expected him to get mashed by the Indian batters and he really didn't.

Personally I thought both Woakes and Carse bowled really well this morning and were very unlucky to only pick up one wicket. But I didn't see the rest of the day so no idea how well they did in subsequent spells.

    Most improved

Andrew Flintoff is an obvious example. In his first five years as a Test cricketer he averaged 5.7, 26.6, 13.8, 5.2 and 27.4 with the bat. Then in 2003 he had a breakthrough year where he averaged 40+ and never looked back. Similar story with his bowling except the breakthrough came in 2004.

    T20 Blast 2025

Another exceptional game from the Steelbacks. Thought we were dead and buried while Mousley and Latham were cruising along.

    T20 Blast 2025

Incredible performance by Ben Sanderson. Six for eight from four overs in an otherwise high scoring match. And he had a catch dropped.

    T20 Blast 2025

It's not just the T20 Blast though. A Northern county hasn't won the County Championship since Yorkshire in 2015, unless you count Warks winning the Bob Willis Trophy.

    T20 Blast 2025

3/3 for Northants, held their nerve in a couple of tight matches. Brilliant over from Sanderson at the death.

Agreed. Rashid has been the most important member of the England white ball setup for most of the last ten years and we have no idea how we're going to replace him. This ODI series against the Windies would have been the perfect opportunity to try out someone else and we haven't done it because...

    T20 Blast 2025

Steelbacks are absolutely flying so far, I love it. Ben Sanderson showing that old fashioned medium pace can be deadly in T20.

    English Domestic Season 2025

I wonder if Benkenstein himself was simply the cheapest option? Other counties have recruited bigger names with better track records, like Darren Lehmann at Northants, or Chris Silverwood returning to Essex.
