He dropped down the order for McDonald too after his first opening stint. He just didn't open enough to be rated that highly as an opener.
Like I said that was him dropping back when the specialised opener (Lawry) came into the team McDonald was already the established opener.

Gooch's away record was so ****ing dreadful. I get he did some amazing things vs Wi but come on. An away average of 36 doesn't lie. Didn't average 40+ away anywhere except India and WI. And his overall record benefits by him playing the majority (63%) of his games at home, unlike other openers we're discussing. He'd probably average sub 40 if he actually toured more.

his stance put too much pressure and weight on his front foot, made his footwork stiff and unnatural and a bit delayed, his trigger movement was also delayed and rendered him a bit daft when it came to getting on top of quality pace and bounce, I don't think he'd average more than 40 in Gooch's era. It's not even an era thing, his technique is just not suited for any pace dominant condition, he won't average 40 playing for 2017-2022 England either.

He has an Australia problem, not an away problem, I don't think he really missed any away Ashes except the 1986-87 runfest, he won't struggle much away outside of Australia. Also had a dominant series in South Africa against Van Der Bijl and Le Roux, not really condition dependent.
