He only opened for 70 innings and dropped down the order frequently during his peak. He does not have the longevity for me to exclude the early no rounder phase. Hanif and Lawry were better for a longer period than the time Simpson spent opening.

Simpson & Sehwag, Cummins & Walsh looking most likely now.... The wkb should be interesting, will Watling walk it or Flower/Pant could make it close?

Not true. The first series he opened in was because Lawry hadn’t debuted yet. McDonald would play his last test less than a year later and Simpson and Lawry became established. Ian Redpath was an opening batsman and when he was brought into the side Simpson stepped down from opening as a trial for him, however Redpath wasn’t an immediate success so Simpson returned to opening after a few tests and Redpath had to wait until Simpson’s retirement before his next shot at the new ball. I imagine Redpath had been building quite a resume on the domestic scene.

He dropped down the order for McDonald too after his first opening stint. He just didn't open enough to be rated that highly as an opener.

Both were very good keepers, ahead of Flower and Pant to be honest. I dont know why CW dont rate Marsh though.
Marsh was very good but think he is worse with both the gloves and especially the bat than the likes of Waite, Watling and even Engineer. Not a better bat while being much worse with gloves than Cameron and Healy as well.
