Best South African to play test cricket for England ?

You could say the same thing about a lot of players though - POS are quite rare and lots of great players don't have many. Pietersen won 2 and by way of comparison Tendulkar won 5, Ponting 4, Sangakarra 4, Lara 4, Kallis 9, and Chanderpaul 7. As a measure of success its a bit hit-and-miss and...

***Official*** Australia in South Africa 2018

Markram should inspire a lot of hope for the future. There's plenty to suggest he could step up and replace Amla or de Villiers in a few years.

    Australian Domestic Season 2017/18

Hopefully O' Keefe would still be considered, especially after such a miserly return today. Mennie and Bird (when healthy) would also be candidates as pace bowlers along with Tremain.

Innings played by batsmen with minimum percentage of runs scored in boundaries

The highest Test score without a boundary ends up getting filtered out of that list. Boycott hit 77 against Australia without a single boundary - he is credited with a 4 but it was run instead of a boundary. 2nd Test, England tour of Australia at Perth, Dec 15-20 1978 | Match Summary | ESPNCricinfo

Innings played by batsmen with minimum percentage of runs scored in boundaries

Zaheer Abbas once scored 70-80 runs without a boundary in an ODI at the MCG too.

AB de Villiers vs Virat Kohli

I don't see how chasing is easier if you have a weak mindset. The pressure is different in both cases and I imagine a lot of batsmen find it less stressful batting first. There is the uncertainty of knowing what a par score is but there is also a lot less direct pressure on the batsmen because...

AB de Villiers vs Virat Kohli

I didn't think chasing was more difficult that setting at target in ODIs. The conventional wisdom I had always heard was that chasing is marginally better for a day game and worse for a day-night. Other than that, it seems like setting or chasing is a preference that each team has. For example...

***Official*** Australia in South Africa 2018

I don't think South Africa's batsmen (except for de Kock) are more out of form than Australia's. The whole South African top order has looked in relatively good touch against Zimbabwe and India in the Tests. Amla and Markram followed that up with a poor ODI series but that is exactly the same...

Best in the world title belt history

I think the late 90s was probably the period where Donald came closest to being the best bowler in the world. There was a 3-4 year period at the end of 90s where McGrath, Pollock and Donald were all consistently close to being the best. In hindsight it makes sense to give that period to McGrath...

And based on his recent form de Kock isn't ideal for no. 6 either.

***Official*** India in South Africa 2017/18

It does seem bizarre. If you're going with 5 bowlers it would make sense to bring a spinner for a bit of variety and in case the conditions change. An extra seamer seems pointless unless you're worried about someone's durability.

*Official* Australia v England post-Ashes ODI series

That's not entirely unique to English cricket though. Similar changes have taken place in Australia over the last 5-10 years. I don't think England have been handicapped that much more than Australia or other nations with regard to first class cricket being affected by the growth of limited...

    ***Official*** Australia in India 2017

I wouldn't count Lyon out so easily. He's bowled really well and has been a tad unlucky whereas O'Keefe has had a few lucky wickets (in addition to very good bowling); Lyon could end up getting a bag of wickets during this series.

CW votes- The greatest ODI teams of all time (Australia)

I'd say Warne is ahead of Hogg by a very comfortable margin. I'm sure his ODI career gets overrated by some but putting him 'marginally' ahead of Hogg seems to be going to the other extreme. He was generally among the best bowlers of his day and there was a good period in the mid 1990s where he...
