Pietersen or Flintoff to open?

Interesting...England are still clearly a little clueless when it comes to their best ODI side right now.

By far the best option, especially for the Champions trophy in isolation, is Flintoff. With the stupid powerplay rules it is ridiculous not to use someone who can exploit them to the full without significantly altering his batting method. However it would probably be pointless if England don't feel he could continue with the job once he returns to bowling (I suspect they are just thinking that Trescothick will return anyway - which would be extra typical of England if whatever they do in the next month is a success!)

Pietersen would be a good option IMO. The more overs he is out there the better.
The thing is he doesn't ever tend to bat the 30+ over innings, so by opening with him, he takes time to settle in and most of the field restrictions are then in effect slightly underutilised.

Far better to have him come in in the middle order for me, so he can set himself up to tee off in the last 10-15 overs.

It's worth a try though IMO, at least in something like the Champions Trophy, especially considering they play a game against Australia. If it doesn't work they can try a different option for the VB series.

Worth trying in Indian conditions - the ball is harder at the start and under the "Power play" rule - and the best part is both are capable of going on to hundreds if they get off to a flier - which England have been short of in ODIs.lately -one in the summer of 2006 by a man who isn't even in India. Wouldn't work on a cloudy morning at Headingley - but in these conditions get your best players in early.

Ah, crap. We've got to the stage where we're using Pitt's ideas. Not good.
You were the one who came up with the 'eleven batters' idea. :p

And if this works, I expect to be hailed as a genius.

bla I said it ages ago. In fact I said they should open together, in a drunken haze. The fact that I never made these statements on CW is immaterial.

Don't worry. It won't. You won't.

Yeah it's all very well to try this for the CT in India, but is it going to be any good for them in the West Indies? it's really only a short term option if you ask me. If it doesn't come off, they will have wasted at least 3 ODI's when a specialist opener could have been getting match time.

To be fair, the role being looked at is more likely the one Trescothick will be playing in the World Cup IMO.

I actually think that this problem is only India-specific to be honest - I don't know what it came from, but it's the only time he's appeared to be weak mentally.

i think the opening pair of england is very good for now. but if they wana change it then they should send pietersen and Trescothick. they would be a good pair spacially in indian pitches.
