5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

Tbh my main impression watching that little innings was that that was someone who was 1000% feeling the pressure and the tension of the situation, those were such nervous, tentative prods
Can't disagree, from the moment I saw him step across the boundary rope I thought he looked very nervous. There seems to be a plan now to keep the ball outside off stump to him, I suspect the Aussies will have noticed.

I wouldn't read too much into this morning tbh. I would definitely read into his first innings dismissal, Cummins and Hazlewood would like the look of a player who tries the angled bat force off the back foot with no footwork.

Well what he's just said there is that his only disappointment is that they didn't go harder after Brook got out last night, and this morning
He may have been right on this occasion, the ball suddenly started doing loads as the weather changed and prodding around was getting them nowhere. Even Root suddenly found it tough.

The general approach is fine, it just occasionally needs a bit of common sense applied to it......like picking players who are fit, in form and have recent red ball experience.
Agree, don't mind the aggressive batting philosophy, it's helped us much more than it's hurt us. Selection more of an issue, mainly the bowling but please get Bethell to play some cricket.

Combined Test XI for the series?

1.KL Rahul
2.Ben Duckett
3.Shubman Gill
4.Joe Root
5.Harry Brook
6.Ben Stokes
7.Risabh Pant (WK)
8.Ravindra Jadeja
9.Josh Tongue
10.Jasprit Bumrah
11.Mohammad Siraj
I think I will go with Smith for Brook and let him keep, and switch Jadeja and Stokes' batting positions.

So basically:

  1. KL Rahul
  2. Ben Duckett
  3. Shubhman Gill
  4. Joe Root
  5. Rishabh Pant
  6. Jamie Smith+
  7. Ravindra Jadeja
  8. Ben Stokes*
  9. Jasprit Bumrah
  10. Josh Tongue
  11. Mohammad Siraj

I've very mixed feelings about the McCullum/Stokes/Key era. The cricket has been exciting, sure, but often unadaptable and braindead. Australia's iffy batting line up might make it more competitive, but I think we'll get hammered and it might be curtains for those three (if we lose badly, then they should all go).

Sundar was miles better with the ball than Jadeja.
