It’s a bit unfair to use missing away tests against him because Jadeja was competing with one of the best spin bowling ARs ever for a spot in conditions that only needed one spinner.

If either didn’t exist the other would have played a lot more games.
Yeah that’s a good point.

Surprisingly(?), out of the 9 games away from India where both played, 7 were outside the subcontinent. Both did quite well in those tests (Ashwin 29 @ 22.55 + Jadeja 19 @ 18.10) - though they may have been exclusively spin friendly surfaces, cbf to check.

I think that's very likely really. Even if not exclusively, by large atleast.

So genuine question....

Isn't it a bigger issue to be almost useless with the ball away from home?
For once agree with you. Jadeja hasn't been a penetrative bowler outside home, often bowling dry spells without looking very threatening. The ongoing series is a good example. Very similar to a famous left armer from 50s and 60s who used to bowl around 40 overs per test for 2.5 wickets on an average. Except that, Jadeja has been dire with one mundane style of bowling instead of being dire with 5 different styles.

There's definitely something wrong with you 🤣🤣

I do hope one day you wouldn't have to be so parochial in your world view

Jadeja has surpassed my expectations as a batsman by socring 500+ runs in away series. Yes, tracks were flat mostly but as a lower order batsman you have to be very consistent to get 500+ runs.

If I run a filter for 300+ wickets and 3000+ runs then entire history we have 5 all rounders who make the cut.

Jadeja is currently averaging highest in batting in that group. His bolwing average is 3rd lowest in the group.

His away bowling average is 36 , but he averages below 30 in Aus, SA, WI and SL. NZ and Eng is the two places where he has struggled big time, but then some one like Murali struggled in India and Aus. Some one like Warne struggled in India and WI. Not saying that he is in the same league as those two as a bowler, but Jadeja gets unnoticed despite doing so well. At least I did not pay much attention to Jadeja before this series. Not sure how many cases we have where bowling all rounder scored 500+ in a away test series. I surely rate him much higher as a batsman now.

Scoring runs in away series is harder for most batsmen, but in the last 5 years he has done really well as a lower order batsman to average close to 50 when playing away.

I don't know how long he will play, but has done very well. Jadeja can make a case to play as a batsman in pretty much all current batting line ups.

I’ve been skeptics of Jadeja for much of his career and considered him overrated but at some point it’s hard to ignore the weight of accomplishment. He’s a bowling allrounder in India (and one of the most effective bowlers of all time in home conditions, and a batting allrounder outside of India (even if he didn’t bowl a ball he would be in for batting), and a great fielder to boot. It’s hard not to put him in the ATG conversation.

As a batter, I put him above Kapil and just below Botham. Hard to put him above or at same level as Botham because Botham batted at 5 and 6 for a large part of his career and hit many tons.

In bowling, I view him in the same way as a Makhaya Ntini, Vernon Philander and maybe even Stuart Broad( Broadie has longevity so edge to him).

If he goes on to play 100 tests and maintain his dominant record with bowl at home even in absence of Ashwin and maintain an avg of 36 with bat as I expect him to bat at 6, he is in the same league of Ian Botham and Kapil Dev for me.

I object to Ntini and Philander of being remotely similar level
