Gavaskar's tour of the Windies in 71 vs Turner's tour in 72 would be a good comparison
Both apparently benefited from dropped catches by the West Indians. Match reports give the following:

Gavaskar

2nd Test, 1st innings. Straightforward chance to Sobers at slip off Holder on 12. Scored 65.
3rd Test, 1st Innings. Sobers again at slip off Shillingford on 6. Carew at leg-slip off Gibbs on 37. Two further chances unspecified. Scored 116.
4th Test, 2nd innings. "Flawless" 117* against attack lacking penetration.
5th Test. "Technical chances" early on during each innings of 124 and 220.

Turner

1st Test, 1st Innings. "Badly dropped" by Carew at extra cover off Gibbs on 47, Scored 223*.
3rd Test. 1st Innings. Given out caught behind on 4. Recalled when keeper Findlay said ball touched ground (which it didn't according to close fielders). Scored 21 in 166 minutes.

Henry Blofeld covered the tour: In just a few years the toughness of [County] Championship cricket has changed Turner from a talented amateur into a shrewd and dedicated professional. He had a remarkable tour with the bat. But for such an able player he scored his runs too slowly and was very different from the fluent stroke maker he can be when opening for Worcestershire.

Gill
4th Test, 2nd innings. Dawson in the gully on 46. Pope at extra cover on 81. Scored 103.
Haven't found any other missed chances this series.

God you guys are ridiculous.

I'm well aware of the series and the performances.

The 70's were the tail end of his career. He was surpassed by Barry with his batting and all 3 started to decline.

Which is why his performances against the ROW series were such a surprise. But both were challenges, and like Lara, that brought out the best in him.

But yeah, by the 70's he was mostly worn down from the work load of his bowling.

It was not an indication of his skills during his prime.

And I'm pretty sure you're aware of all of this.
