I mean they are selected from a wider tool of players.
As are ours.

You’d assume say, with the current Australian XI (lets say captains are disregarded in this scenario) the first players selected would be Smith and Cummins, rather than starting with Konstas and Khawaja.

Hell it could be changed to

2 openers
2 bowlers
keeper

As the opening savvy for a team, and go from there. People might select their spinner first, and they’re assured of the keeper’s batting ability, which makes the remaining potential allrounder spots easier to choose?

Idk tho, I’m happy the way things are.
I generally do 2 opening bowlers/pacers+medium pacers and then a spinner or spin bowling option, if the spin stocks are low. Then I just do a "pick another bowling option" which many a times means a bowling allrounder, but also just another bowler as well.

There’s always a joker in the pack
I actually think it's an advantage. He is the type if he lives up to his billing and take a pitch out of equation and win a game on his own. Hope he makes it.

Ambrose Steyn Imran wouldn't be a horrible combo but Barnes gives a unique edge.

Might work. Just ask the people to choose their best 2 players for second team and build the team around those two. Luffy can try this for the third team if he is fine with it.

Cummins and Smith are standouts. At this level in the AT XIs, there wouldn't be such clear standouts, and it would get really messy

I don't think it's unreasonable but think is overcomplicating things a bit. Like if it was 3 instead of 2, the chances of Imran making team XI as one those choices is quite high, and then everyone will be forced to jam fit him. What I am saying is, many rate Imran as better than Marshall/Hadlee and especially McGrath, but not everyone of them have him in their ideal XI.

Note: that wasn’t a suggestion for how things should be run at all. This was just an example showing how XIs aren’t just selected in batting order.

We have the luxury of picking an ideal ATG XI so I don't see why we can't mention the positions players will occupy for selections when we are selecting players.

I really can't think of a real reason why people they think 1970s Cricket was different than what came before, really the only reason I can think of is them having a weird fantasy of overrared hacks like Viv or Lillee bending them over the coffee table, ****ing their brains out raw until morning and leaving without aftercare, otherwise I have zero explaination for the 70s Bias phenomenon.
