The manner in which Bumrah is picking up wickets is qualitatively as good as anything I've seen. Someone much smarter than me should calculate the percentage of gifts he's benefited from, subjective though that criteria may seem. I suspect it will be among the lowest ever.

Bowling avg in different venues during Garner's career: Taking top 6 countries. If you round off NZ stats then all countries are in 30-34 range.

Bowling avg in different venues during Bumrah's career : Taking top 7 countries - SA is an outlier( which you really don't need stats to figure out) otherwise all other venues falls in the same range as 30-34.

That's why when you take out SA during Bumrah's time - Aggregate avg of these venues : 31.74 runs per wicket
Just to put it in perspective , if you see aggregate avg during Garner's time in listed venues : 32.10 runs per wicket

SA is the one venue which pull avg down by one run. If you add SA then aggregate avg of bowlers: 31.11 per wicket.

I tried to stick to top 6-7 teams beacause back then SL was only true minnow and now we have bunch of them.

My Take away - Unless you play lots of games in SA( which mostly SA bowlers will do due to home grounds), you don't really going to have much advanatge of playing in current era because all venues are tighly packed in 30-34 range just like Garner's era.

I have not seen any cricket of older era and raw stats may miss something. But so far no raw stats shows that we should adjust Bumrah's avg higher when comparing from older era. .

Why are you using 2016, when Bumrah didn’t start playing until 2018?

Just see this:

Average of batsmen that Bumrah dismisses is comparable to those that Marshall, McGrath, Ambrose dismiss and much better than Garner. Era adjustment doesn't matter because Bumrah plays most of his games against top 4.

Top 3 are Bumrah, Barnes & Lohman.

Howstat used to have breakdown of a bowler's wickets by top, middle and lower order. Does anyone know where to find that for Bumrah and Garner?

Still does. Bumrah isn’t listed on any of the highest percentage pages, nor on total wicket pages since he hasn’t taken enough, so I manually calculated from statsguru.

Garner 85 (32.82%) 87 (33.59%) 87 (33.59%)
Bumrah 68 (31.34%) 86 (39.63%) 63 (29.03%)

Wasim has the highest (35%) of tail wickets amongst the top pacers iirc. Garner's 33.6% is also quite high.

Closest bloke to having a perfect spread I think. Pretty impressive considering he had the new ball for less than half his career and who he was bowling behind.
