3rd Test (Lord’s) - 10 July to 14 July

Whatever it takes!!!
It’s just what batting with the tail is like though. People are getting on like he’s the first batsman to ever face boundary riders with a 10 and 11 at the other end. With Bumrah and Siraj sticking around for 80 balls or so, even scoring at 3 an over would have won them the game.

What really stood out was that running 2s weren’t a part of the strategy at all. Almost any good match winning innings with the tail involves a lot of knocking it into the gaps and trying to push hard for 2. It’s how you punish that field.
Yeah but Jaddu is also a terrible judge of runs. Like I said, the best he could hope for was doing a Laxman and he almost did. If Bumrah did not deviate from the script and Siraj had a bit more luck, we may actually be calling it one of the greatest innings of all time.

Mightily impressed with Carse who looked to be flagging after the last Test, he came back with a bang in that second innings
Only this time a year ago he was banned from all cricket Carse

Durham showed faith in him and now England are getting the benefit

I think he will retain his place for the next one with Atkinson coming in for Woakes

that’s assuming Stokes and Jofra come through this game and are ready to go for the next

I don't entirely disagree, but you can make a case for essentially anything on the basis of "if".

So what was the reason for India giving away so many extras in the game? Poor keeping, bowling, fielding, all of the above?

Well Bumrah, Siraj and Jadeja have spirit.

Most of the rest of them showed none of it.
Spirit is a very tricky thing to quantify in a game like cricket. I'm sure if the Test was being played under Marquess Of Queensbury rules, our boys would've given even Ben Stokes a run for his money spirit-wise. But there's only so much you can do with the bat in hand when technique and mind are not quite functioning optimally.

A word on England's very old school win here. This was not Bazball, not even close to it. They just played the way they had to, to win the game. I dont think this will change much about them overall but its good that they were able to put their pride in their pocket and play this way at least once. In a lot of ways, this may well be their most important win under this management and it was not Bazball, it was proper test cricket. I guess their results from now would tell if this is a flash in the pan or a pivotal moment that changed the course of this team.

For India, I feel Pant would have saved quite a few of the byes, leg byes and wides we conceded down leg. If he could have saved like 5 of those boundaries, we may well have won. That injury cost us in this game. I dont think it cost us "the game" but it definitely hurt our chances very badly. If Pant's finger has a fracture, obviously Jurel comes in and bats 6. I would also see if Akash is fit and maybe bring in Prasidh for him. And get Kuldeep in for Bumrah at the Oval.

He has moved but they didn’t play him either

it’s a unique situation but England have chose to do this
Not unlike the opener position, the only English spinners in England who have done a good job at county level of late are ones who have been varying degrees of average for England (there are some up and coming openers who are could do a job but who might be considered a little bit risky at this crucial moment in time) it’s why I don’t hate Crawley and Bashir’s continued selections and why I think they deserve a little bit more slack, doing what are very difficult jobs in English conditions

Strong Durham, strong England!

No, what I mean is he worked out that this was the best tactic and given how close it came to winning, I dont think criticizing him for it is really the way to go.

Almost all of the byes I saw were balls from seamers swinging down the leg side. I doubt any keeper could've got a hand to them.
Pant usually does with this one handed dives and his trigger movement as a keeper takes him a foot down the leg side always. Its one of the idiosyncrasies of his keeping that helps the side in that aspect.

Maybe, but by the same token he probably doesn't deserve to be praised either (i.e., because the strategy failed). I know they came close and all, but as good ol' JR used to like to say, "almost doesn't buy you the groceries".

Like in football where the commentators always bemoan fights breaking out and say ‘nobody likes to see this’, I think if you ask most people if they want to see a game played in good ‘spirit’, or whether they want to see a game played on the edge with a bit of needle, they’ll want to see needle. I didn’t see Siraj’s dismissal of Duckett live, but when I finally got round to seeing it, I didn’t understand what all the commotion was about! Heck, WG Grace was a bit of a rascal wasn’t he?

Nah... in this case, I think it does. This rearguard may well have an impact on the rest of the series with how these guys bowl going forward etc. Stokes already looks pretty cooked and had Siraj defended that last ball properly, he may have had to will himself on for one more spell. I do think it worked very well.

I remember in the 23 Ashes, Stokes threatened to win a test just like Headingley 2019 but the Aussies just choked off the boundaries this time around. You've got to take massive risks with eight or nine on the fence.

If Bethell plays it's for Crawley or Pope. England should be playing Dawson, Atkinson, and two of Archer, Carse, or Cook.
Root as the sole frontline spinner instead of Bashir is a big no no, Root and Bethell together fulfilling the role of one player with the ball? That might work? Would be surprised if Dawson or Leach play, but I suppose Dawson did play against the Windies in the white ball stuff the other day
