3rd Test (Lord’s) - 10 July to 14 July

If Gavaskar is out, for example, other guys like Laxman, Amarnath etc would be in with a shout who would otherwise not make the XI. The WI quartet for example rated Amarnath higher than Gavaskar.
A drop off from Gavaskar? Yes.

but a drop off from Bumrah would be no comparison. Who are you replacing him with that’s not already in the side?
Indeed the WI rated him highly. The thing is the players you have mentioned weren't openers and SG did it for the majority of his career when India weren't strong.

Easier to create a makeshift opener than it is to create a makeshift fast bowler. That’s what we are comparing.

He passed that mark a while back. In terms of allround, match-changing wicket-taking skills, I think he's up there with Marshall, McGrath, and Steyn.
He has to be based on his absolutely insane bowling average.

He's already in my top 5/6 greatest bowlers of all time. He's the best bowler of his generation across formats so he has to be up there.

I think the primary thing that holds him back is the number of Tests he has played compared to others. If he can play another 25-30 Tests with a similar ish average, I think he will be up near the very top.

India's ball gathering skills in the field have been abysmal. Lost count of the number of times they've scooped and fumbled the ball in front of them instead of cleanly pouching it. Go at it with hard hands and probably take their eyes off at the last instant too.
