Bro it's losing games by failing to bowl sides out in the 4th innings when we should be winning that has been the hallmark of our (limited) failures over the last ~5 years
We've lost chasing with sides containing Border, the Waughs and Damien Martyn. We failed to bowl out sides when the best we've had is Siddle. The former's a choke, the latter also down to quality. If we lose with our present lot then I'd be surprised.

if he fails in the 3rd, its basically mean he is worse for u in the long run, as the occasional big score, results in lulling you in, false sense of security, keeping him for too many loss games after . black jack table return - gives u hope then bust for 5 innings in a row.

Factoring in the pitch and the quality of the WI batting and Oz bowling attacks, can't see the West Indies getting close to whatever Oz set as a target.

But having said that, credit to the West Indies as they've been more competitive than I thought and made this a good series. Especially compared to how insipid Sri Lanka were when they hosted Oz a few months back.

Tbh for the first time in the series I was disappointed in our bowlers. I thought they hid the ball outside off stump and allowed Green and Lyon to survive comfortably when it should have been very difficult.

Twice we have arguably had a slight advantage, or an even chance at worst, going into the morning of day 3. Losing these sessions in both tests and not looking as aggressive or up for it as they did on day one and two is the mentality of a side that is too used to losing. I'm really disappointed.
Indeed. That visual they showed after about a dozen overs of bowling that not one ball would've hit the stumps was damning. Unforgivable especially when you have a nightwatchman to bowl at.

Credit to Lyon though, always been good value as a nightwatchman.

Bro wut. We've failed to bowl teams out in the 4th innings with this exact bowling line up when we should have nearly half a dozen times in recent years. Eg. Last couple of Ashes in England, v India in Australia, WTC final

Smith has really turned it around since Adelaide hasn't he. He is averaging 60 in 7 tests since the Gabba century last year. 9 test he played before that point between the end of 23 Ashes and the second test vs India in the BGT last year, he was averaging 27. The most notable difference was in the SR where it was 43 in the phase that he struggled and 56 in the last 7 tests. Honestly didn't think he had it after Adelaide and hopefully it continues for a little while yet

Looks like he has freed up his approach to batting, looks more relaxed and looks to score more than surviving. Something Marnus can definitely take note of

Yeah but is that them not choking though? Sides are better at chasing now (except us). How good were the pitches? I'd call not being able to bowl out this WI batting side on an up and downer with 300 to defend a choke.

Yeah he’s been fantastic tbh. And looks a cut above everyone on tough pitches even now.

although it came during his lean patch, that 90 odd he made in Brisbane when WI won there last tour was as good an innings on a crap deck against quality bowling as you could see. He was playing a different game

I think there is a connection between Smith's SR and average as mentioned above. It was always frustrating seeing such a great player dry up at the crease. Maybe the mambas he's been batting on recently has changed his thinking and he's going for runs before he gets the inevitable wicket taker. I agree his batting on these decks has been at least in the league of his golden run.

I remember people discussing this back as far as the 2020 home summer in Australia. Smith was coming off that insane 2019 ashes and averaged ~40 that summer because he was striking at 40. He was still facing as many balls as he would during his peak, but instead of being 100(190) he was 70(190).

That was the worst I've seen him bat over a summer. He went from batting like shubman Gill now to batting like shubman Gill about a year ago in a matter of six months. Wagner really got to his head
