I know the family a bit. Scyld is a wonderful writer and journalist but a) he's long had a soft spot for India and Indian cricketers (he met his wife on tour there in the 1980s); b) like many writers, he rates narrative and moments of "heroism" over statistical accomplishment; c) he tends to see more cricket in England and India. Everything has its biases, but once you appreciate he is a writer and not a statistician, enjoy the writing.

Interesting how his cricketer list contradicts his bowler list. Like he has Donald over Pollock here and Johnson is much lower.

time tbf, he made the bowler one in 2025 and the Cricketer one in 2017, though I like my explaination more.

He actually wrote an article last week calling Bumrah the greatest bowler to have drawn breath, extolling his virtues.
There are sound commercial reasons for having a current player at number one. It reinforces the message that the game is better than ever and it is worth buying a subscription or placing an advert.

Twenty years ago there was a concerted campaign in certain publications to position Warne and Tendulkar as greatest-ever bowler and batsman. There was no longer much money to be made from endless repetition of old stuff about Barnes and Bradman.

Why is that?
Do we end up overrating him here then?
This isn't going to be a popular answer, but yeah.

Top 10 definitely, and this isn't my opinion, but no one ranked him when he played or even well after his retirement as highly as he's rated here, where he's generally around 3rd.

The first tip off is that he literally never makes any all time teams. Even from layers of his era, he's always missing. And it seems he was rated more highly as an all rounder than as a bowler, and even then behind Imran and Botham.

I've gone though a ton of lists, articles, interviews, a lot of reading, asked former players. From his era alone he's behind Marshall and Lillee, even from the subsequent era his trails behind Ambrose, McGrath and Wasim.

I can say for sure, but it could be a little like Sunny where he's seen as a "fair weather" operator, and that's reflected a little in the comments for this article.

A few other reasons have popped up, but not from enough sources to definitively make any assumptions.

Again for me he's still 3rd, but definely not in the same tier as the top 2 and not in the GOAT debate, that for me is between the aforementioned two, if you want to include Barnes and possibly for some, the two spinners.

Kimber should have really found a better partner than Robbie.
Ashwin now that he's retired would have been perfect imo. He has that proper great cricketing brain.
I don’t need to hear Ashwin after his retirement thanks.
Not his friend, but have communicated with him some times
Just like answered general questions through email or some other format I presume?
