He took down SSC in P Sara trophy which was captained by Mahela who was regarded the best at the time. The match was televised live and Vaas won it via pure tactical battle with Mahela. Some bowlers after taking wickets, only allowed to complete the over was either never bowled, or bowled when some other batsmen came in.

He has captained the side in all 3 formats. He sort off co-captains the test team as temba leaves a lot of team talks to Aiden.

Probably Dale Bekenstein but he wasn't good enough to make the side as a batsman at the time.

Barlow and Mitchell appear to be the best batsmen to never captain SA. Cullinan as well. Mudassar Nazar and Ijaz Ahmed are the only competent Pakistani cricketers to never captain that I could find. No idea if any of these guys were captaincy material though.
