What have we learned from the 1st test?

India has Jadeja has a passenger. He didnt bat much and spin is a waste of time in these pitches.

I don’t think spin is a waste of time anywhere, obviously England is probably the least spin-friendly country on the planet, but even so, it’s not very seam-friendly at the moment neither, and it’s always good to have another option to turn to, especially when you have to treat your seamers carefully, and especially when even in English conditions, the pitch can still break up. Lyon was getting the ball to rag at Lord’s the other day when the seamers weren’t getting much joy, albeit the Saffers played him fantastically well. As for Jadeja’s batting, he was a bit of a passenger, but considering how weak 8-11 are, is that his fault? It’s always possible that your number 7, more often than not the last proper batter in the team, can get stranded if the tail get blown away quickly

Has the quality of the big 3 fallen off a cliff?

Seems to me india were close to a complete team 2 to 3 yrs ago......where did your bowlers go (apart from JP obs)?? Australias batting is looking as bad as Englands bowling stocks. I cant remember a time Aus couldnt replace batters with some quality and the same with Eng bowling stocks. Like you cant expect to replace the likes of Broad and Anderson over night but fmd i thought we had prospects in the wings with Robinson and Archer.......(think were gonna go all in on him and probably bust this next test)

Are we entering a phase of some seriously poor test sides?

We've just had two epic run chases in the last two test matches in England.

Fielding standards have fallen through the floor though

I've learned that this series got its own sub forum for some reason despite both teams being incapable of winning or even making a WTC final, but actually I'm okay with it because it doesn't clog up the real cricket happening in CC.

Yep, weak #era due to the rise of T20 league cricket around the world. Domestic franchises and infrastructure are geared towards producing T20 ball bashers like Mitch Owen and Konstas, rather than a patient top or middle order Test batsman of the calibre of say a Dravid, Gavaskar or a Pujara, or Langer, Clarke, Hussey as an Aussie examples.

I see no point backing Shardul atm. He's just a better batter than Bumrah and a better bowler than Karun Nair. Gambhir tries to make him a strike option but the captain has no faith in his bowling, and has no reason to do so either.

Dropping Nitish Reddy after a good BGT was also very confusing to me, especially when you are batting Nair at 6 where Reddy is way more suited.

And obviously the fielding.

My XI for the next test: Jaiswal, KL, Sai, Gill, Pant, Reddy, Jadeja, Kuldeep, Siraj, Prasidh, Bumrah.

Re England, I think you are being a bit harsh on Bashir. He actually bowled pretty well in the first innings, with as much control as I'd seen him and in the context of a pitch that didn't really deteriorate he didn't do that badly. There has been a bit too much of a focus on bowling figures against the context of the actual game.
isn't that always the issue with Shoaib? he bowls some decent deliveries and can bowl tight but he is too non threatening, and that's in England where you'd see rough patches form on the wicket on day 4 and day 5, even on Pakistani turners, Bashir was so far less effective than the Pakistani spinners. Really, I don't think he should go to Australia, he just won't take wickets even if he bowls a decent enough line, I really think if pitches will stay this solid or flat we should just play all pacemen attack in this series, and definitely need an all pace attack in Australia.

- Prasidh was useless. I had my doubts after that 1st test vs South Africa in 2023 at Centurion. Clearly not test match level. Siraj is overhyped, with only fake aggression to show. If only he had as much energy in bowling consistently session after session as he does burning bridges with the other side.
Siraj is such an easily dislikeable character, doesn't help that he is such a mediocre bowler, he has good balls here and there but is just like Bashir in the sense that he is ridiculously unthreatening for your second pacer, I don't like how he gets in his pissy little fights with centurions like Head and now Duckett, you're getting cleaned up, you're not in the position to act like an entitled brat

Yeah england are world beaters when the opposition drops all our main batters again and again.

Jadega got a lot of turn when he did pitch it in the ruff but ducky reversed swept him to oblivion. Both Brook and someone else were dropped off his bowling in the 1st. Bash bowled either side of the wkt. He did get Pant though who was threatening to put the match beyond england. But he lacks a stock ball to keep the batters quiet and cant tie up an end for a session so the seamers can be rotated. However thats not the bazball way.
