You do realise he won majors (Pro Slams that were far more competitive than the Amateur Grand Slams before the open era) on 3 surfaces, and won 200 titles over his career on 5 different surfaces?

Like I said before, he was one of the best pre Open Era but tennis back then was not that competitive and physically demanding like it is today.

Like I said, you’re clearly unfamiliar with that era. Go look up some info about the pro tours of that time, and how many matches players would play against the other very top players.

Unless his overall record is more underwhelming than you expected, this is a good thing. Away record will always be a more accurate reflection of a player's quality than home.

I don't claim home record counts for nothing. Massive respect for someone like Ash, who makes it into my bottom tier ATGs on the back of being a top tier home ATG. But would you not rate Ash higher if you inversed his home and away records? And why would this principle not be (close to) universally applicable?

I agree that it is true in 9/10 cases but I think historically there have been exceptions, Mostly cases where the home wickets are actually some of the most unproductive/difficult in the world for a Cricketer's primary but away are much more productive for their primary disciplines, like if you reversed Ken Barrington's and Ted Dexter's home and away record I'd rate them higher.
