All the bats below are to face 20 overs of an attack of peak Thommo, Shoaib, Croft, Holding. No restrictions on bouncers or bodyline and one beamer allowed per over. The pitch is a 5th day cracked Sabina Park one. Batsmen are eliminated either by being dismissed or retired hurt. Goal is to make it the full 20 overs.

Which bat lasts the longest on average?

Bats:

Border
Viv
Steve Waugh
Ponting
Gavaskar
Tendulkar
ABD
Chappell

Sunil Gavaskar never suffered a serious injury from a fast bowler throughout his career despite facing some of the deadliest bowlers so he is one of the top picks
he is so small, if you bowl shorter good length balls they'd go over his head like bouncers.

Any list discussing bouncers without Aravinda is incomplete. He is basically the second best player of short ball barrage after Viv.

Viv probably has no weakness but at some point he is going to get provoked and going to play aggressively so higher likelihood to get out.

Yes. Same with Ponting and the pull. They will take on the bowlers and eventually go for one too many shots.

I think most likely to make it are Waugh or Border. They are prepared to bat even if a hand is shattered.

Chappell and ABD too as they mix defense with counter attack but I don't think they can sustain many body blows if a beamer sneaks through.

Sachin and Gavaskar are too technically correct and will get out to a ball that goes too low or rears up.

Include him sure. I don't think he makes it 20 overs. Shoaib may pitch it up and get him.

Shoiab is not that good. It will be Holding who could cut the ball that is going to trouble him most. Pure pace is a non factor for him. It was Kallis who have him most trouble, then Pollock, Schultz and Donald the least. So you can work out the pattern.

As we saw yesterday with South Africa vs Australia, playing overly defensive against a great pace unit just gives them a taste of blood and they're gonna keep targetting your stumps or body as they know you won't attack, playing aggressive on the other hand, can push the great bowlers on backfoot and make them bowl away from the stumps/body or bowl too short. People like Viv, Tendulkar and ABD would punish the bad balls and therefore keep the preassure on the bowlers, that's why I think overly aggressive ones have a better chance than overly defensive ones, though balanced is definitely the best approach.

This approach works till the bowlers aren't great, but bowling on a helpful track. A bowler like McGrath would just try to hit the stumps and let the pitch play it's games. Shoaib, Croft etc, lack that discipline. However Holding is likely to have that discipline, and Ambrose for all money has it.

If you can effectively put Thommo, Shoaib, Croft off their game, you're just left with 8 overs of Holding and Ambrose, Ambrose was also often put on defensive when attacked sufficiently like Inzamam die, so it would really only be Holding who would always come for you regardless of the context.

Runs have no meaning in this contest.
