Look. At the end of the day, Australia has not won a series in England in 25 years, the last time Australia won a series in England, people were still playing on the Playstation 2, so cut us some slack.

It’s not really his fault.
But playing just 4 Tests in Asia(none in India) & 80% his career in just Eng/Aus puts him in my Tier 2.
find it amusing how certain people would critique Trueman for playing less away but not Chappell for playing in two relevant countries and underperforming in both.

Playing well against Australia, especially in Australia, should basically be the benchmark achievement for any halfway decent test playing batsman.
Yeah I agree, success in Aus, moreso than even England, is critical in player evaluations.

However, by that token, Ponting in India is a major hoke given they were the greatest competition for Aus in the 2000s.

Mate, my kids were playing on a Nintendo DS when England last won a test in Australia. Even Corrin had hair back then

Ponting's peak is like Alec Bedser's, the stars aligned for it.
Ponting IMO would be averaging in the 60s in his peak, he just happened to do it in a flat era but clearly was that pedigree of player. He was threatening Lara Tendulkar standing at one point, don't think Root will.

Of course it is, his record in India is what puts him a tier below the likes of Lara and Tendulkar in his era. Have never said otherwise tbh.

The weird thing about Ponting in India is his two best series there came when he was past his best and had started to decline. Randomly made three seventies there on his last tour in 2010 and averaged 60. If you had to pick a time in his career where he'd have a decent series there, it would not have been then.

Great players adapt, it's a big part of what makes them great. Ponting might have averaged 55 in his peak in some eras, might have been 65 in others, but he wouldn't slump to something like mid 40s or whatever.

Chappell didn't underperform in WI. Was basically par in England. Did well in Pak albeit flat series. Did great against Hadlee in NZ.

Of course, his trumpcard is WSC.

when Australia last won a series in England, Steve Austin was still an active wrestler.

Keyword – at one point, at one point it looked like Kohli will be elite ATG in tests, he ended up as a Martin Crowe level batsman. So No, Ponting was a low 40s average bat until 2002, then averaged 70 for 5 years, then regressed to a 40 averaging bat for the remainder of his career, that 40 woild probably be 30 if he played in a spicier era.

48 on roads is ok, 40 in England, Pakistan is worthless considering how flat the pitches were, no Imran and scorecard of 617-382/2. He has one good knock against Hadlee in NZ but generally hit or miss on spicier Kiwi wickets, averaging 40 in NZ outside the absolute road he played on, in 73-74.

It's mediocre.

Greg Chappell’s away record :

1. 40 in England isn’t great.

2. 48 in WestIndies. It’s good. Just one tour in 1973 where the top bowlers were Keith Boyce, Vanburn Holder and an aged Lance Gibbs

3. Pakistan : One 3 Test series. Average of 76. It is due to 235 in a very high scoring match

Pak scored 387/2, Aus scored 617 and both teams did not play the second innings.

Greg scored 235. Yallop scored 172.
Kim Hughes scored 80. Rod Marsh scored 71.
Miandad scored 106. Taslim Yarif scored 210.

You are forgetting a great series against Hadlee in 82 in NZ and an outstanding 5 test series of WSC in WI when he scored 3 hundreds and a 90.

Overall a very good away record.
