Top 50 Greatest test batters

Johan

International Coach
Pollock has a test career so he can be compared with Root, Barry doesn't and doesn't have a case whatsoever as far as I'm concerned

Ok.

His peak was great for 4 years, but what did he do outside the peak? that, is where the problem arises, he averaged 41 odd.
5 years but he was worldclass essentially for 8 years. Which is longer than Kohli or Smith or Viv.

Imagine scoring nearly 70 at a near mid 60s SR.

I lived through the peak, I don't think the quality of runs is that good (2003 BGT, West Indies serieses at the time) and I don't think there's any 8 year stretch where he averaged 70.

all in all, he doesn't do anything to really seprate himself from Sangakkara, Root and Kallis career wise.

I already said it's fine for him to be grouped with them.

Hey, Root's away record in Australia being heavily criticized, while comparing him with Ricky "Harbhajan's bunny in India" Ponting is top tier Irony, which sadly is completely lost in so many.

I mean we get nobody is pretending Pontings India problem doesnt exist otherwise he would be a top ten bat.

I'll try

Bradman

Hobbs

Sachin
Hutton
Viv
Sobers
Smith
Lara
Hammond
Gavaskar
Headley
Sutcliffe
Maybe Pollock
Chappell

I guess those are the names I can definitively put above Root, Him-Kallis-Sangakkara-Ponting can go in the same boat. I thought a bit about Pollock.
Think Kallis and Punter easily tops Root as well.

Joe Root will make 3 tons if not 4 in the upcoming Ashes series
You talking about his bowling figures, surely. Won't make a single hundred and will go home on the back of another hiding.

Ricky Ponting didn’t have a single good series in India as well. Is not playing well against Australia alone such a huge thing in Root’s career?
Playing well against Australia, especially in Australia, should basically be the benchmark achievement for any halfway decent test playing batsman. They've been consistently the best test playing country in history, and you can count on one hand the number of eras where they've ever been outside the top two or three sides in the world. Of course it's a huge thing if you suck against them because generally speaking, especially over a career the length of Root's, they are more likely to consistently challenge you than any other country.

You poor people don't get it. If Australia is ranked two, the team is seen as weak and not up to standard. That's how it should be if you have decent standards. Three or lower and it's a national embarrassment. Again, as it should be.

The WSC-era test side and that of the mid-80s (except of course for TOTAB) rightly had their citizenships revoked, only to be reinstated once they began performing after the 87 WC and 89 Ashes. If you're an Australian and you consistently played mediocre-to-**** against England over a career for as long as Root has against Australia, you'd be nothing more than an embarrassing footnote, a stubborn piece of old chewing gum to be scraped off the sole of the shoe of Australian cricket.
