They only average the same because Tendulkar averaged less as a teen for a phase.

But anyways there isnt anything wrong with Vivs overall record. I also don't think Tendulkar underachieved. Viv perhaps underachieved because he had the tendency to get bored and lose his wicket which perhaps accounts for relatively less tons (speculation). He could have averaged 2-3 points more if he had more hunger for runs but it's still a mostly flawless record.
While this may or may not be true.

It can't be simultaneously a large part of his legacy and also something to be separated.

Not to mention its spillover effect being people saying Warne is the weakling in Australia ATXI bowling attack and that anyone from Richards to Hammond will smash him around.
But when you look at an Australian attack, isn't he kinda relatively the weaker and quite arguably easier and preferred bowler to target?
McGrath, Lillee, Lindwall / Davidson and Warne.

Difference between weaker link and weakling btw.

You do realise, some batsmen are better vs spin than pace, and vice versa?
That's correct, what I am pointing out to is the subconscious bias that exists w.r.t Asian batsmen scoring runs against pace vs spin. Mohinder Amarnath is revered for his batsmanship against fast bowling, do you think that he would be remembered in the same way if those runs came against a top quality spin attack?

Playing and doing decently as a teenager is better than not playing as a teenager. So it adds to his legacy compared to players who weren't even good enough to play as teenagers.

Playing and doing decently as a teenager has a small negative effect on his overall average even though he was adding positive value to his team compared to a player who wasn't even good enough to play as a teenager. So it should be kept in mind when comparing raw averages.

It actually makes perfect sense unless you think sitting at home masturbating at age 16 is better than being good enough to play test cricket.

He is also the bowler you will expect the most wickets from

You could argue about Lillee being better, but he isn't the weakling with Lindwall/Davidson

He is as good as any modern bat on a game by game basis even without giving him points for the teenage stuff, and clearly better than any of them over a period longer than their careers.
