Rated fine, he's behind the top top 5 pacers and and top 2 spinners and rated at the top of the group with Lillee, Donald, the WI duo, Wasim and Lindwall.

No issue with where he's rated.

Yeah, he benefitted massively from the stuff the op mentioned, but everyone knows that already. He still had some good performances away.

ATG bowler.
Fair assessment.

anyway, due to Subs's persuasion, Barnes is now the third greatest bowler of all time.

Kallis retired in 2014, been 11 years, it's been a while
For us and by us I thought Holder was well on his way: I believe at one point he was averaging around 26 odd with the ball and mid 30s with the bat. Plus he had an atg series at home vs a good English team. Then he fell off a cliff. We do have the likes of Stokes and Jadeja though.

Not Hadlee?
The reason I think McGrath beats Barnes is that his Ashes record is better in a more batter friendly era (though, not exactly roads either), that obviously doesn't apply to Hadlee, I don't exactly know why I place Hadlee over Barnes if I am honest

Stokes sucks

Why are Maco and Hadlee better than him?
McGrath is better for me because he has a better Ashes record by the barest of all margins but in a more Batsmen friendly era and Ashes is the one constant in Cricket for more than a century. Marshall is above McGrath for obvious reasons for me.

Why is Ashes so important though given that he wasn't facing really top batting lineups?

Hadlee is extremely close to McGrath.

Ashes plays a huge role in the legacy of Australian and English Cricketers and it's the one constant lineup they faced, the other is South Africa which was about a Pakistan (current) level side in Barnes's time but was very strong for McGrath so won't be a fair comparison.

to me, McGrath's India record further cements him as #2.

Ok. He is my number 2 as well. But not really much between him and Hadlee.
