In CW's top 100 greatest cricketer's poll, Sehwag made it above Kumble (88 vs 90).
So, just wanted to see the consistency of CW consensus.

Anil Kumble averaged 30+ in all countries except India and Bangladesh. Yes he was a great match winner at home but was poor/average elsewhere.
Virender Sehwag averaged 45+ in Australia and 50+ in India, SriLanka, Pakistan, WestIndies and Zimbabwe. He could win matches away from home as well.

Kumble has some great performances in Australia, which you wouldn't notice if you only went by checklist.

I never felt Anil Kumble could win us a test against Australia whereas Sehwag gave me that confidence.

Judging Kumble on average is a huge disservice on him. Nowhere it is as true as in Australia, where I think he is the best touring spinner in this millennium.

I always felt we could win any match if Kumble was bowling on Day 4/5 in India but outside home he just wasn’t good enough to inspire confidence.

Sehwag batted in one of the most flattest eras and still couldn't manage to average 50.
Saying that he was a match winner away from home is just stretching it.

I don’t rate him very highly. I remember during the 2003 tour that he did pick wickets but it is after they trash us for 400-500 runs so not a match winner.

But he didn't though, outside of SC. His average in Australia is in some quite high scoring games against some pretty weak attacks, and he sucked marvelously in England, South Africa and New Zealand.

He averaged 29, next best was 35; and he took 1.5x times the wickets of the next best in one less match. Was a borderline ATG series and India drew it.

Speaking of Australia, the aggregate average in the matches Sehwag played in Australia was 38. So, averaging over 45 shouldn't be anything extraordinary for an opening batter.

Averaging 44 away from home in one of the most flattest eras isn't match winning. And really, there were two batters in his team who were averaging 53 and 57, but Sehwag was somehow the one who was winning matches?
And again, Kumble bowled in very flat pitches and had some great performances in Australia.

Kumble is in the best half dozen spinners ever.
Sehwag is a national great bat but I think Kumble was more valuable and slightly better.

Interestingly they rate similarly in the 2024 Batsmen (Sehwag @ 39) and 2024 Bowler (Kumble @ 40) polls. However, if we take into consideration their rolls (opener v spinner), Sehwag is the 9th ranked opener and Kumble the 12th ranked spinner (down from 8th in the 2022 Spinner Poll).
On this basis I would rank Sehwag marginally ahead.

Completely agree. I have 8 spinners as ATG's. Kumble is one of them.

you mean you rank Sehwag higher in terms of CW consensus and not your own opinion, right?
And don't think spinners are the bowling equivalent of openers. So, comparison between those two list doesn't mean anything to me.

I was looking at CW consensus across formats.
If you wanted to know my opinion on Sehwag v Kumble I would simply say this is another ridiculous player comparison. I have consistently refused to compare players with diametrically opposed skill sets.
