BJ Watling+ retires

Our best ever wicketkeeper batsman. Absolute legend.

Hopefully Blundell and Seifert are half as good as he was.

Weird to think that despite probably being NZ's GOAT keeper-batsman Watling is a fairly anonymous figure within his own team. A player who's excellence will only be truly understood once he's gone I suspect.

Managed to thrive as a batting partner which feels like a rare thing these days. A massively calming influence for whoever he batted with*

This is really good.

The finest of his ilk in the last 15 years. Has an insane number of memorable, even series defining knocks for a WKB and of course safe as a house behind the stumps. One of my favourites and always liked him doing well, usually in adverse circumstances. Probably worth 45 in the average column because of that imo.

The WPWB is giving it up after the tour of England. Hope he goes out on a high with a 200* (500) to seal the WTC title for us

NZ would have to be like 60-4 for that to happen though. Actually, imagine a CdG run a ball ton to go with that. Oh my.

The companion piece is of course

Life is Paine (Paine w/ partners min 5 innings)

Really? I thought he was significantly younger than that for some reason. Been a fine player for NZ, but I suppose it gets to the point where he has to concentrate on his career rather than being a part time sportsperson.

What a legend he's been. At first I thought he'd be a useless makeshift keeper, but that turned out to be one of the worst takes of my cricket-watching life.

TBF it had been a distinctly dark era for keepers then. We were all a bit jaded. Watling then ruined the #notterrible meme by being #****inggood

I can't even remember who I wanted to be picked instead of him at that stage. De Boorder, maybe?

Thread title makes it sound like with a bit of extra cash you can buy a BJ Watling with enhanced capabilities, a marginal improvement on the standard variety

Seriously though, good cricketer. Arguably a bit underrated, probably in part due to largely being considered a red ball specialist

Yep, I remember thinking after he tonned up against Zimbabwe, which I think was his first Test as a bonafide WKB, that it was all well and good as a temporary measure but it wasn't likely to work.

But his sheer bloody-mindedness and incredible work ethic has got him to legendary status as a New Zealand Test cricketer. One of the rare few who can retire and say he got the absolute best out of himself. He was robbed of a match-winning knock in his debut Test, if there's any justice he'll play one in his final one.

Absolute superstar.
