"Australia is a bad place for spinners" is another myth which keeps getting resurrected for some reason (maybe because it's the same people involved). More great spinners have come from Australia than any other country, maybe barring India. It's a different place for spinners than the subcontinent. Doesn't mean it's bad.

When talking about Warne, Australia is a bad place for spinners.
When discussing about Ponting or Smith, Australia is a bowling friendly country.
When Lillee is involved, Australia is a batting friendly country.

More like bad for finger spinners perhaps and of course, you cannot rule out the fact that regardless of conditions, players will work out a way to succeed in their home country as that is where most of their cricket is played anyways.

Come back to me when a good overseas spinner from anywhere does well in Australia. Hell Lyon and Warne both have better away records than home ones, and their skillsets (especially Lyon's) were tailor-made for Australian conditions!
Though in fairness the "Australia is **** for spin bowlers" meme is more of a 21st Century thing.

It will be the same as me arguing India is not tough for seamers because Shami and Umesh are awesome here. Sometimes players pick up skillsets that helps them in conditions they play most often. You cannot assume it is straight away easy for all bowlers of the same type because of that. The only place where it is really true, IMO, is England and South Africa but even there, the fact that your batsmen get blown away (as visitors) far too quickly means the bowlers are at least so tired that they can't really be at their best.

Kumble's 24 wickets in 3 tests in 2003-04 against batsmen born and bred in those tracks is better than any single series performance Warne has had in Australia.

Yep. Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Martyn, Gilchrist all in their prime. Katich was in great form. Waugh in his last legs played good knocks too. It is hard to find holes in that performance.

Would this have anything at all to do with the fact that apart from Vaas and Malinga, and more recently India's pace attack, spin is (was) the premier form of attack in Sri Lanka and India respectively, whereas in Australia it is/was not?Spinners who have taken 20+ wickets in Sri Lanka since 1980:

If Smith had to face Wagner more often (has only played 4 tests against the great left armer) instead of those mediocre Indian and English bowlers he probably only average in the low 50s.

Fair point. His record is overinflated by the Ashes.India is no longer mediocre. We are very proud of our bowling these days. Smith lucky to be banned when India last visited with Bumrah-Ishant-Shami trio.
