Limited Top 6 Draft

During lockdown I think it's more than reasonable to have two drafts running at once, so here we go. This test draft is going to focus more on players outside of the most-dominant cricketing nations. Players eligible are:

  • an Australian test player who has played the majority of his test matches as a opening batsman.
  • a Pakistani test player whose dominant role in tests has been as a batsman from 3 to 6. NB: Mushtaq Mohammad is eligible for this.
  • a English test player who is an all-rounder in tests. I'm going to draw the line here that Wally Hammond and Maurice Tate are just ineligible, whereas Woolley is eligible.
  • a South African test player who has played the majority of his test matches as a wicketkeeper.
  • a West Indian test player whose dominant roles in tests has been as a fast bowler. NB: Learie Constantine is eligible for this.
  • an Indian test player whose dominant role in tests has been as a spinner. Jadeja is considered eligible, whereas Mankad is not.

Also eligible are:

  • Any test player from Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Ireland, or Afghanistan.
  • Any person (or hamster) who has not played test cricket.

A Test cricketer's country of nationality is to be determined by the country that they played the most Test cricket for. In the event of a tie, that cricketer is eligible of either team. 11 rounds at 6 hours per pick, but 24 hours for the first pick of the draft and 12 hours for the second pick.

Who's in?

I'll give it a go. Though the English all-rounder rule could get confusing. Why don't you attach a minimum runs/wickets rule to that?

Teuton

It certainly is draft season. I also have an idea i was going to start shortly but might hold off til the other one is finishing now.

In by the way.

Yeah on reflection that would be better. What do you think of:

  • test batting average higher than 26
  • test bowling average lower than 34
That does what I intended, I think.

Sounds alright. Maybe a minimum wickets per match rule for Indian spinners is in order too. Mankad not being regarded as an Indian spinner feels weird.

I don't mind if Mankad is included or not but in my mind the Indian spinner rule is pretty straightforward otherwise; not many marginal cases.

so what is the Mankad rule/ruling?

for mine, 162 wickets in 44 tests qualifies as specialist. But as long as we know going in what your call is it will be fine either way.

Sir Alastair Cook qualifies - i think you need a min WPM (ie 1)

I'd say yes, he's allowed.

Yeah good point, I'll implement that.

Currently I'm wondering if it's a good idea to ban 3 players who are pretty OP picks, they could tilt the draft significantly in the favour of the first three pickers. Thoughts?

At the end of all this we should also vote on what the most complicated draft game was... :p
I don't think any of them are overly complicated. This one probably has the most exceptions.

"Complicated" implies rule complexity and even the alphabetic draft isn't overly complex. In fact, you someone who has never drafted before it's probably just as easy to teach as a standard draft.

The complexity arises from the choices involved in balancing your team and the available players to pick from.

I'm sitting this one out because I need a little break from drafting but after Teuton's draft I'll start a reverse alphabetic draft.

Whatever it takes!!!
Yeah, gotta admit, none of these recent draft games are a shade on any of Nufan's ones, which are the gold standard for complexity. :)

Speaking of Nuffers, where is he? He has not been posting for a while now and at this time, its concerning. :(
