afaik it's the only Indian song that's gone somewhat mainstream at all, at least in the last 15-20 years, so I don't have much to compare it to

For those into Indian music might find parallel in Ilayaraja and AR Rahman. AR Rahman is the Tendulkar of Indian music industry.

Similalry his music peaked in the 90s too like Sachin, but gets academy award for his most bland music composition ever.

Yeah, I love AR Rahman too. But he did his best work in the '90s (bar a couple here and there in '00s), loved some of the movie scores he did back then.
