Wouldn't someone like Bob Taylor, Don Tallon or Jack Blackham be a more appropriate wicket keeper for this team? What is wrong with Alan Knott's stats?

Just seems to have a bigger reputation. Was struggling for keepers and put him there. Tallon probably a better pick.

Wilton St Hill, Reggie Spooner, Lionel Palairet, Colin Milburn.
Read Reggie Spooner's Wisden obituary and some articles. One wonders if Laxman or Martyn would be perceived differently if our knowledge of them came from the pen of an aesthetically inclined writer rather than footage and stats.

Viv Richards averaged 50 with a SR of almost 70

Whats wrong with that number????
Nothing but there are many who've averaged around 50 but none get as much praise and worship as Richards. Not Ponting, Dravid, Harvey, Worrell, or anyone else.

Sehwag averaged 49 with a SR of 82.
Different era when scores of batters averaged in the 50s.

And Viv's overseas record was awesome. Viru struggled outside Asia in general. Viru is a great. Viv is an all time great. By any logic, Viv should not be in this team. His number back his reputation. Honestly, even Kapil should not be in this team.

It's funny because in many ways Viv and Ponting had very similar test match careers. Both were the best batsmen in the best sides in the world at the time. There were other batsmen around with comparable records (Border/Crowe for Viv, Tendulkar/Lara for Ponting). But Viv is held in so much more reverence than Ponting and I think it's largely due to his post-2007 decline. If Ponting had have retired after the 2009 Ashes when he was 35 he'd have retired with 11000 runs at an average of 56 over a 15 year career. He'd still be in the top ten run scorers of all time. We'd have been fawning over it and thinking that he retired early and probably have held him up as equal to our better than Lara/Tendulkar.

Take the last 3 years out of Viv's career and he ends with an average of 52, just a shade above Ponting's career average. Viv had less of a decline than Ponting did, but he still declined.

I guess final impressions do make a difference. Ponting I fell is severely underrated due to his last 3 years where he scored 2100 runs at an average of under 37 (which admittedly is higher than all bar one of Australia's current crop of batsmen).
