Burgey

remember when Maxwell just let a ball go and bowl him in a BBL game a few years back? Still one of the funniest things I've seen on a cricket field. Clarke did something almost identical in an ODI too.

Yeah, that crossed my mind. That was a simple inswinger. A swinging ball from Akram would make his mind explode.

Twatto is chronically underrated in Limited-overs. I wouldn't question anyone selecting him in an ATG ODI or T20 side.

ODI bat avge 40+, bowl avge: 31. Didn't play much against minnows either. Similar stats to Kallis but scores his runs much quicker, and he's just a 6 hitting machine when he gets going.

One of the best BBL moments. I was watching the Clarke one too, 2007 World Cup v NZ (James Franklin the bowler). Pup was probably too distracted thinking about what outfit, shoes and hairstyle he was going to wear to the after party.

I agree. Twatto is an ATG limited overs great.

To be fair, Kallis should not be anywhere near the ODI XI either. He's going to waste too many balls up the order and I'd rather have a Kohli there instead. I don't think he'd be well suited to the bowling all-rounder batting down the order role. Would rather have Klusener as the 5th bowler.

Klusener is the only guy who I think could realistically challenge Watto for a place, or possibly Symonds but you'd be losing a bit with the bowling (but gaining a lot in fielding)

I cant pick the opener to go with Sachin. If I get Gilly, I don't get Dhoni whom I do want. If I get Sanath, I get a duck farm.

Gilly. Need a 95+ striker to allow Sachin to be at his best. Pick Sanath if you're playing in conditions where his tweakers might come in handy.

With Gilly it becomes:
Gilly
Sachin
Ponting
Kohli
ABDV
A Dhoni-like finisher. Maybe Bevan but that strike rate is too low, sure he was great in chases and all but I want a fast-scorer here. Symonds?
Klusener
Pollock
Akram
Murali
McGrath

Hmm not sure if he qualifies as the hard-hitter to go with steady Sachin.
Sachin was a hard hitter in the powerplay overs. He just invariably made it through and wound the gears back to accumulation.

Amla scores deceptively fast.

Amla SR 88.90
Guptil SR 86.38
Finch SR 90.90
Jayasuriya SR 91.20
Gilly SR 96.94
Dhoni SR 88.40
Rohit SR 86.96

He is beating some noted 'power hitters'.

Nothing wrong with using Watson to solve your openers issue. Not the best bat around, but he's one of the very few that can be used as a proper bowler and come close to making the team with the bat. I reckon ahead of everyone comparable except Klusener, and they have very different roles with the bat.

Really quick effort. If I spent more time I'd try and find better batting at 9 and get rid of possibly Akram, or more likely one of Murali or McGrath. It is really easy to replace Amla with QdK and pad the middle order, but its fun to include Buttler and see what the middle order power looks like.

Would be happier with a batsman who bowls better support spin than Tendulkar. Jayasuriya comes to mind, but who does he force out? Same with Symonds.

Deep in batting and bowling. Donald+Symonds or Murali+Watson to be taken depending upon the pitch.

Klusener, Cairns and Watto is overkill. I really don't think Cairns deserves consideration, better off picking another genuine quick bowler. I'd rather see Shane Bond if you're after a Kiwi.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I want 6 frontline bowling options, and a raft of reliable big scoring 6 hitting ability down to batsman #8, 9 preferably. So while you think its overkill, I'd be looking to make it stronger again.

Cairns isn't in the team because I am after a Kiwi. I don't like Pollies batting record at all in ODI and I would probably happily drop Cairns for Flintoff if I had given more thought to the team by crunching the numbers. I just don't recall or know what pressure runs Flintoff ever made. I know Cairns won an ICC final with a century and often carried the NZ team through the dark years of the 1990's for NZC.

But dropping Cairns:

1Tendulkar (second spinner)
2Amla
3Kohli
4ABDV
5Watto 6
6Buttler +
7L Kluesner 5
8 F Flintoff 3
9Akram 2
10Murali 4
11McGrath 1

Come to think of it, maybe Pollock would be ideal at 9.
