Bucknor along with Orchard was one of the best umpires in the late to mid 90s. He certainly has shown some decline in the last few years, but that should not diminish his stand out career. And who can blame him for staying on a few too many years as they pay has got a lot better for umpires the last few years. Good on him. Wish him all the best in retirement.

50 is probably a pretty decent Umpire, and 10 is park-ground level standard. The precious few Umpires who'd manage to get a 50-out-of-100 score are either already on the ICC Panel or have been offered the chance and turned it down.

Ind33d. So far:
Not so good: 12 Indian fans
Moderate: 7 Australians, 1 Kiwi, 5 Indian fans, 1 SAfrican, 2 WIndians, 2 Brits
Pretty good: 8 Australians, 5 Kiwis, 1 Lankan, 1 Pakistan fan, 1 SAfrican, 5 Brits, 1 WIndian

Pretty much along the lines of what I'd thought TBH.

I didn't expect the lines to be this clear though, hah. Wonder if Archie is seeing the vote breakdown, and still thinks whether nationality doesn't have an effect.

I think he picked a good time to retire. He was starting to make more mistakes.

The thing I liked about him was he made the decision he thought and stuck by it. Last of the old school I would say. I reckon we will se more robotic umpires like Tuffell.

All in all I would say he was a good one and umpiring is a hard job!

The truth, of course, is that it does for plenty and doesn't for a few. I'm one of those few, BTW - I couldn't care less about nationality when assessing a player. In fact I couldn't care less for anything other than his ability to do what a cricketer must do.

Look, he was an extremely good umpire for a good chunk of his career, but over the last few years his decision making graph has constantly shown a drop in accuracy, he also got involved in a few controversies, I think he should have retired after the WC final, but he instead dragged on his career for a bit too long, and to an extent, that's has dented all the good work he did prior to that.

Despite all that had a pretty decent career, but overall when you sum it up, it was just about a moderate umpiring career.
Agree with this

I think Bucknor was a very good umpire, who had basically one bad series (in Australia against India), and has been vilified ever since....
Yes, he was better in his younger days, but he continued simply because those coming up from the elite panel (like Tiffin, etc) were simply not good enough.
