O'Brien for Gillespie is the other interesting one. I was thinking that O'Brien probably deserves a go with good test performances, and of course Gillespie is erratic as we know. But who will bowl at the death now? O'Brien? Don't think he does that for Wellington.
Mills, Southee, Ryder. Gillespie was trash at the death anyway. O'Brien has a pretty handy slower ball, could be an option at the death. If you read his blog you will know he is working incredibly hard on his OD game.

O'Brien has been bowling at the death for Wellington and he has been bowling at first change (as asked to by the NZ selectors). I'm pretty stoked he's in the side, reckon he should have been in their from the go ahead of Gillespie. O'Brien is accurate and his speeds are getting up there, he's an excellent foil to the attack. NZ works best as a team (barring the exception of Bond who was just phenomenal) and a player like O'Brien knows how to bowl to a plan, Gillespie is a bit to wayward at the moment for the team. Mills-Southee opening the bowling and picking up a few wickets (admittedly at 40-50) with O'Brien/Vettori bowling in the middle overs tightly seems like a good plan. Fulton should be in the team ahead of Styris anyway and the only problem I have with our current lineup is that we're lacking the brilliant Oram. Broom however should be fighting for that 5th batting spot with Fulton and Styris anyway so this is still a strong team.

If Ryder and McCullum finds form, I'm perfectly confident in our middle order which is pretty sweet. Guptill-Taylor(who's gun at the moment)-Fulton-Broom just oozes class to me. McCullum, Taylor and Fulton are always on top of their games against Australia (look at their records in recent years) and Ryder, Guptill and Broom are all extremely talented. This could turn into one heck of a batting lineup in years to come.

O'Brien is in the side Flem...

Arnel looked pretty rubbish yesterday tbh. All his wickets were caught on the fence.

Your Phlegm XI lost a lot of points by including Elliott, Boucher and Steyn IMO.

Elliott Wellingtons third best player too. (O'Brilliant, Ryder, Elliott)

but I am considering changes to the team.

 Franklin, and Woodcock not to mention the Jeetiness are better than Grant 'Jack of all Trades' Elliott.

Steyn's a bit of a dick though quite a talented outswinging fast bowler and I'd rate Dhoni, Haddin, McCullum ahead of Boucher. And out of my favorite actual WK in the world I'd say Rahim.

Woops forgot Jimmy.

Grant "jack of all trades, master of all" Elliott is just awesome. Stop denying it.

He is as a NZer, internationally he's a bit average though. Reminds me of a poor mans Harris (also not included sheer awesome Harrisness)

All those 6 you mention look like they have the ability or promise to be there. But Broom and Guptill are new, Fulton and Ryder haven't fully established themselves yet and McCullum is still trying to prove himself as an opener. ie. we lack experience. Therefore I'd still pick Styris over Fulton if fit. The only question with Styris is if he's motivated enough to play ODIs for NZ any more, what with his new career in commentating and all.

Nah he's one of the rare bits and pieces players that actualy works imo. Makes him a gun. Reminds me of Styris pre-specialist batsman stage actualy.

Gutted with the side tbh, no Oram or Styris. Presumably Oram's broken another toenail or possibly grazed his knee. Funny he's generally fit against the likes of Bangladesh etc when we don't really need him & but unavailable when we do. Really thought we had an outside chance with Oram & Styris fit, but given the Aussie side should be primed after there 5 games against the African's, we maybe in for a whitewash.

Fulton averages 47 against Australia, from 8 matches. He isn't all inexperienced.

Brendon Diamanti is a new one to me.

Just looking at the New Zealand side, looks short of 'real' batsman.

Vettori, Boult, McCullum, Diamanti, Ryder, Taylor, Fulton, Southee, Elliott, Patel, Mills, Broom, Guptill, O'Brien

We have 6 genuine batsman and 2 bits and pieces players (not including Vettori/Mills). That isn't too bad but its a little worrying that our cover for an injury to one of the top 6 is Diamanti or Eliott (though maybe Elliott could bat 6 fine)

Or a 3 hour flight...

If an injury happens 3 or more hours before a match, we will fly in a replacement. Glenn Turner himself said the selectors were treating this series like a home series and will fly in players if necessary.
