Dinesh Karthik doesn't make the squad for the Pakistan ODI's, and just as that selection was flashed, he missed a straight one from Munaf that took out the stumps.

Munaf has had a much better match so far.

I forgot to mention- a dive by Manoj Tewary was converted to a world-class catch to get rid of Niraj Patel.

Some scratchy batting in the final overs seems to have blunted the Blues' challenge. First the catch of Niraj (that was undeniably top stuff), then a slog that didn't come off and Powar returned, then an extra single had Joginder run out, then Karthik bowled by Munaf. So far, 321 for eight.

Flat pitch, fast outfield- lots of runs. Excess part-time bowling adds to them. India Blue gets 330 for eight.

India Green so far: 174/5 in 24.3 overs
  • Joginder got some productive movement that sent back openers Yusuf Pathan and Anirudha.
  • Yusuf tried to hit one rising Joginder delivery out of the ground, but skied it. That ends his tournament, as the Greens slide deeper into defeat.
  • Joginder castled Anirudha with a neat delivery.
  • Selectors Bhupinder, Vengsarkar and Jagdale were sitting near the sight-screen, and Parthiv ordered them out of the way.
  • Parthiv played a good hand, with a 50 at over a run a ball, but was run out by Joginder on a direct hit.
  • Yo Mahesh bowled a lot faster, but was very expensive and struggled to hit a line and length.
  • Goa's Saurav Bandekar had a bad match, going off in the middle of an over, with an injured thumb. He bowled slow-medium stuff.
  • Even as I type, Powar bowled out Manoj Tewary, looking good then.
  • Mishra is a clever leggie who gets a lot of turn. It's good to see him getting chances.

Haha, that's gotta suck.
And he top scores (all tournament) in today's Challenger trophy final with 116 from 91 balls and a 168 run partnership with NK Patel.

India Red get an OK'is 269 but India Blue haul it in just 41 overs.
Raina (Blue), Badrinath(Red) and Gambhir(Red) get one more half century each,
Raina has a 50 in each of his 3 matches to top the tables with Karthik , Gambhir, Badrinath not too far behind.
Praveen Kumar is wicketless but still tops the tournament as the bowler with Joginder Sharma being next (and both competing for a second allrounder slot)
Sehwag betrays once agan, 1 run.

Kaif had an ordinary tournament even as the team he captained went undefeated.

Badrinath, Raina and Karthik came out on top here. Don't understand how Sehwag ended up with the call-up.

Vengsarkar is a wonderful selector, isn't he? ;)

I genuinely thought that we finally have found a good selector, someone who is prepared to take tough decisions and is also fit enough (in our ******** way of thinking, that is) to make such decisions and then we see him doing stuff like these..... I am just so disappointed at the moment... :(

Perhaps the decision was made in order to remove Ganguly from the opening spot and open with Gambhir and Tendulkar with Sehwag as reserve opener and Ganguly in the middle order.

feel pretty sure that it is not the reason. Will take a very strong guy indeed to even attempt to break the Sourav-Sachin opening combo. Get the feeling that Sourav has the strong backing of Sachin as of now and will take a very brave man to get him to move from his favourite slot, something both have openly said they prefer.

This tournament shouldn't be taken seriously at all, for a national selection. What if one two-match hero fails for ten ODI's in a row?

Anyway, the schedule should have OD's and FC's distributed evenly, not all in one bunch. We'll get ODI-ready players better from such a system.

Strangely, none of the Ranji matches going on have been telecast on NEO Sports, though there's a mention of this in all the TV time tables.

Bengal taking on Hyderabad at the Eden. Might go on one of the days in the second half, particularly if Laxman is batting.

Went to see the evening session of the Bengal - Hyderabad match at Eden Gardens today. 100-200 spectators were present at the ground which is usually the case during domestic games at Eden (which is always heartening because I have seen footage of domestic games in other stadiums and we hardly find any one in the stadium at other grounds). 100-200 is a very good number according to me. Of course, on the rare occasions when Ganguly plays, crowds have crossed the magical 1000.

Coming to today, Bengal had already established a firm footing in the game forcing Hyderabad to follow on. The session was all about Murtaza Loghdar. He bowled superbly extracting turn and bounce and giving no room for the batsmen to get free runs. What's more, there were hardly any loose deliveries which meant that the batsmen's patience was tested aplenty. Manohar played a shot he had no business playing and Teja, after hitting a few glorious shots, became too aggressive perishing when he should have battled on. Murtaza's bowling figures - 13-5-22-3

Laxman didn't find it easy either versus Murtaza who almost got him with a beauty early on. Laxman was in no mood to play any unnecessary risky shots. However, he finally perished after he tried to hit a ball which rose higher than he had anticipated. A few glorious shots, a few marvelous wristy flicks which only a few in cricket can play but not much more this time sadly.

Coming to the other Bengal bowlers, Ranadeb Bose (7-2-26-0) was completely out of sorts bowling the wrong length. Too short and punished by Teja and despatched to the boundary even easier by Laxman. Paul was bowling the right length but he didn't have the pace to trouble the batsmen here. Bad light stopped play 15 minutes before close of play. Bengal should be able to win the game on day 4. Hyderabad, meanwhile, have a lot of mulling to do after being thrashed the way they have been here.

My observations from the Delhi/Rajasthan clash:
  • The curators may have taken 22 yards of the outfield and put it in the middle, because that's how the pitch looked.
  • Not surprisingly, that's also how it behaved. At a slow pace- all in the 110's or 120's- there was excessive movement with the ball going around in curves.
  • Even Rajat Bhatia, bowling at less than 120 regularly, got enough movement off the pitch and stifled the batsmen so much that his first seven first-innings overs were maidens!
  • Pankaj Singh, the giant seamer from Rajasthan, was very impressive, getting bounce and movement off the pitch, and was rewarded for top-notch bowling with a ten-wicket haul.
  • The other Rajasthan bowlers were nothing special, but the combination worked well.
  • Twenty wickets fell in the first day!
  • It was a good innings by Virat Kohli, who makes his claim for national selection a lot stronger. He ran well between wickets and paced his innings nicely.
  • Rajasthan were the better fielding side, with everyone contributing.
  • They were, however, hopeless with the bat, with no standout performances at all.
