Somerset's New Zealand Journey

Somerset

Cricketer Of The Year
Got my copy of ICC 3 today so thought I'd see how well I can lead the New Zealand team. Any comments welcome. ;)

First up for the new coach was the 2007 ICC World Cup - at least a semi-final is expected from those amongst the team.

The side selected was:
S.Fleming
P.Fulton
C.McMillan
R.Taylor
L.Vincent
M.Sinclair
N.Astle
B.McCullum
D.Vettori
J.Franklin
J.Oram
S.Styris
K.Mills
S.Bond
M.Gillespie
D.Tuffey

Controversial decision to exclude Jeetan Patel but Matthew Sinclair got the nod over the Wellington off spinner.

Group Match vs England
A must win game first-up with a victory likely to result in an extra 2 points for the Super 8s.
McMillan, Taylor, Mills and Gillespie left out.

New Zealand 275/8 (50 overs)
J.Oram 68
M.Sinclair 41

England 227 all out (43.3 overs)
I.Bell 100
A.Flintoff 69
S.Bond 4/30
J.Franklin 3/34

New Zealand win by 48 runs

Comprehensive performance from the New Zealanders, a total of 250+ always looked likely and when England slumped to 5/69 the game looked all but won. A partnership of 140 from Bell and Flintoff looked to put England back in the box seat, however Vettori grabbed the wickets of Bell and Nixon and Bond took a hattrick to polish off the tail. Only worry was Tuffey conceeding 60 from his 6 overs.

Group Match vs Kenya
With the big game out of the way, Kenya and Canada should be easy victories for the team. Good opportunity to get some match practice before the Super 8s.
Taylor and Gillespie replace Styris and Tuffey.

New Zealand 301 all out (49.3 overs)
M.Sinclair 107
J.Oram 70
T.Odoyo 6/53

Kenya 105 all out (21.1 overs)
S.Bond 7/34

New Zealand win by 196 runs

A solid batting effort saw the team get through to 301. Sinclair and Oram shared a partnership worth 130 at a respectable rate. Thomas Odoyo bowled extremely well for the Kenyans but Bond ripped through the Kenyan top order to knock them out of the match completely, before coming back for a further two wickets to bag seven in all.

Oram, Sinclair and Bond all gunning it early. Should look to post 350 against Canada.

Group Match vs Canada
Last match to trial players before the Super 8s. Two solid efforts have been posted batting first but only Sinclair and Oram have passed 50. The bowling attack looks very polished.
Fleming was rested with McCullum opening. McMillan and Mills both played and Lou Vincent also sat out.

New Zealand 318/5 (50 overs)
P.Fulton 114
C.McMillan 79
J.Oram 44*

Canada 209 all out (33.4 overs)
G.Barnett 86
U.Bhatti 60
K.Mills 4/27
S.Bond 4/32

New Zealand win by 109 runs

New Zealand batted well with Peter Fulton making his highest ODI score. McMillan and Oram provided good support as well as Canada were put to the sword. However the minnows batted aggressively in reply and at 2/154 had the chance to push towards an unlikely victory before 6th bowler Mills took 4 quick wickets and Bond polished off the rest.

Looking forward to following your story and comparing selections and results! :)

No cheating now!
Haha no point in that. ;)

I went with a fairly similar squad to that of the real team that represented New Zealand at the World Cup but may make a few changes after the tournament.

Super 8 Match vs West Indies
And onto the Super 8s with the only surprise qualifier being Bangladesh after their victory against Sri Lanka. The West Indies have had a similar road so far, tough game first up (lost to Pakistan) and two victories against smaller nations.
Fleming returned to the side and Matthew Sinclair was chosen to wicket-keep, with McCullum sitting out.

West Indies 236 all out (49.1 overs)
S.Chanderpaul 65
C.Gayle 55
J.Oram 4/37

New Zealand 237/6 (44.1 overs)
P.Fulton 56
R.Taylor 51
C.McMillan 48

New Zealand win by 4 wickets

West Indies posted a competitive 236 with Chanderpaul and Gayle the main contributors. Oram picked up four wickets at important times and was the pick of the bowlers. New Zealand batted brightly and were 2/93 after 15. From there they cruised to victory against an average West Indian attack.

Super 8 Match vs Bangladesh
New Zealand's second Super 8 opponent was Bangladesh, with 2 wins (one against Sri Lanka) in the group stages as well as losses to India and South Africa.
The team was unchanged from the victory against West Indies.

Bangladesh 252/6 (50 overs)
S.Nafees 90
M.Ashraful 41

New Zealand 253/5 (44.5 overs)
K.Mills 66*
P.Fulton 61
C.McMillan 51*

New Zealand win by 5 wickets

Bangladesh batted well and reached 252/6 with Nafees batting well for his 90. New Zealand looked shaky in reply at 5/153 after being 1/103 but Mills' smashed 66 off 49 balls at number seven and with assistance from McMillan, the target was reached with 31 balls remaining.

Super 8 Match vs Pakistan
Our next opponent is the currently unbeaten Pakistanis (although lucky to manage a tie with Australia).
Again the starting XI is unchanged.

New Zealand 325/7 (50 overs)
C.McMillan 94
M.Sinclair 67
J.Oram 59
S.Afridi 3/59

Pakistan 197 all out (30.5 overs)
Younis Khan 57
K.Mills 3/11

New Zealand win by 128 runs

New Zealand scored a huge 325/7 after electing to bat first. McMillan scored 94 from just 76 and Orams' 59 came at an equally impressive rate. Pakistan managed to score quickly throughout the innings but lost wickets regularly. When Younis Khan was dismissed to leave the Pakistanis at 6/170, the game was effectively over.

Super 8 Match vs India
Important match against India, also unbeaten so far in the tournament. One win from the final three games will secure a semi-final.
McCullum replaces Ross Taylor and will wicket-keep with Mills to bat at number six following his good form with the bat during the tournament.

New Zealand 260/8 (50 overs)
P.Fulton 101
B.McCullum 60*
A.Agarkar 3/43

India 255/8 (50 overs)
R.Dravid 89
Y.Singh 72

New Zealand win by 5 runs

An amazing game of cricket resulted in a New Zealand victory by 5 runs. Batting first, New Zealand struggled to 260/8 after being reduced to 5/109. McCullum batted brilliantly for 60* and Fulton scored his second ton of the tournament. The 38 runs Bond and McCullum added for the 9th wicket proved to be invaluable. India also lost early wickets and found themselves at 3/38. Yuvraj Singh and Dravid added 157 for the 4th wicket and India looked to be heading to victory but both were dismissed, as well as Irfan Pathan, within 13 deliveries and with new batsmen at the crease, New Zealand applied the breaks. India still managed to get within 6 with a gutsy effort from Agarkar in the final overs.
