Somerset's New Zealand Journey

Cricketer Of The Year
Super 8 Match vs Australia
A semi-final spot is assured but it would be nice to knock the Aussies out of the tournament! Another loss and they may not be able to make the semis.
No changes to the side that beat India.

New Zealand 287/5 (50 overs)
P.Fulton 139*
B.McCullum 83*

Australia 290/3 (47.2 overs)
M.Hayden 107
S.Watson 71*
R.Ponting 59

Australia win by 7 wickets

New Zealand found themselves in an identical position to the Indian match, left at 5/119 with McCullum joining Fulton. Both made their highest ODI scores in an unbeaten 168 run partnership for the 6th wicket. Only McGrath managed a respectable bowling analysis. Australia hit out in reply and soon found themselves in control. Hayden scored 107 with support from Ponting, Watson and then Clarke finished the deal.

Great effort from Fulton and McCullum, unfortunately it wasn't quite enough.

Super 8 Match vs South Africa
The last match for both sides in the Super 8. If South Africa win they knock out Australia and finish in 4th spot, while if we win, net run rate will decide if we face Pakistan (in 3rd) or Australia (in 4th) in our semi-final. India currently lead the table.
Syris comes in to replace Franklin.

South Africa 292/8 (50 overs)
H.Gibbs 112
G.Smith 88
S.Bond 3/59

New Zealand 293/9 (48.3 overs)
C.McMillan 40
K.Mills 40
A.Hall 4/60

New Zealand win by 1 wicket

South Africa made an imposing 292/8, with Smith and Gibbs scoring 150 for the first wicket, and at one stage South Africa were 1/208. New Zealand fought back well at the death to restrict them to under 300. New Zealand batted positively throughout and every batsman made a start without going on. McMillan and Mills were the top scorers with 40, though seven other batsman passed 20. When Vettori was ninth out, the Kiwis still needed 19 but Bond and Gillespie scored the required runs and New Zealand secured the win with 9 balls to spare.

Semi-Final vs Pakistan
New Zealand finished second and had to face Pakistan in third. India (1st) defeated Australia (4th) in the other semi-final by 116 runs.
Franklin replaced Styris for the match with an otherwise unchanged side.

New Zealand 315/8 (50 overs)
M.Sinclair 80
C.McMillan 76
S.Malik 4/56

Pakistan 277 all out (43.1 overs)
S.Malik 82
I.Nazir 46
S.Bond 3/41
J.Franklin 3/62

New Zealand win by 38 runs

New Zealand batted first and posted another large total against the Pakistanis. Sinclair and McMillan shared a stand of 142 and Fleming, Oram and Mills all scored 30s. Malik pegged the run rate back at the death with four wickets. New Zealand bowled well early on to leave Pakistan at 6/99. However the Pakistan tail made a superb effort and nearly took the game, with partnerships of 80, 15, 19 and 64 for the last four wickets. Malik scored 82 from 76 and number 11 Gul managed an unbeaten 22 to give the Kiwis a massive scare.

Final vs India
The biggest game of the tournament for both sides. India's only loss came to New Zealand but was a match they looked liked winning with 15 overs to go.
New Zealand made no changes to the side that beat Pakistan in the semi-final.

India 329/4 (50 overs)
R.Dravid 88*
V.Sehwag 67
M.Dhoni 50
S.Ganguly 47*

New Zealand 305 all out (49.5 overs)
B.McCullum 119
C.McMillan 52
S.Bond 50*

India win by 24 runs

India batted first and smashed their way to 329/4. At one stage a total closer to 400 looked more likely as their run rate reached 7 mid way through the innings. Dhoni managed 50 off 37 balls opening to set the scene, and Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar and Ganguly at the death enabled India to post a massive total. Gillespie and Franklin combined went for 121 off 13 overs. New Zealand had both Fulton and Fleming run out and were struggling at 4/61. McCullum joined McMillan but wickets continued to be lost and at 8/208, New Zealand were heading for an embarrassing defeat. Bond helped McCullum reach his maiden ODI century in a 95 run partnership and in the process recorded his own highest score, posting 50 in the last over of the match. Munaf Patel went for 87 off 10 overs and only Sreesanth conceeded less than 50 in what proved to be a high scoring final.

Disappointing to fall at the final hurdle, superb effort by McCullum though.

So, no rain interruptions or Duckworth-Lewis shenanigans in your run to the World Cup final.

I think i'd rather have seen your World Cup than the actual one... Sounds like a quality final and that one wicket win earlier on would have been as much of a nail-biter as that victory in the Chappell-Hadlee.

No rain interruptions throughout the entire tournament actually, would've been an interesting addition to the game. And agreed about the victory over South Africa, was a tense last few overs!

New Zealand are next off to Sri Lanka in August 2007.

The squad selected was:
P.Fulton
S.Fleming
M.Sinclair
C.McMillan
R.Taylor
L.Vincent
B.McCullum
T.Weston
J.Oram
K.Mills
J.Franklin
D.Vettori
S.Styris
J.Ryder
S.Bond
M.Gillespie
B.Martin
J.Patel

Daryl Tuffey is the only member of the World Cup squad to miss selection for the tour. An extra wicket keeper in Weston was selected, and two spinners (Bruce Martin and Jeetan Patel) also made the trip, as well as batting allrounder Jesse Ryder. With conditions different to those at home, a tough battle is expected with the Sri Lankans, who will no doubt be looking for revenge after their early World Cup exit.

How good is Gareth Hopkins? Can't be much cop if Weston is a better player than him.
